Watch Kirk Hammett Screw Up “Nothing Else Matters” During Power Trip Festival Performance

0

They may be the biggest metal band on the planet, but it’s sometimes important to remember that the guys in Metallica are human after all. No amount of sold out shows or millions in record sales will change that fact and fans at this past weekend’s Power Trip Festival witnessed that fact firsthand.

After a quick guitar doodle by lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, he was supposed to launch directly into the massive ballad (and perfect time to get a beer) “Nothing Else Matters.” It’s an intro that according to Setlist.FM, Metallica’s played roughly 1,280 times, but that didn’t stop Kirk from fuckin’ it up.

As you can see in the clip below, Hammett starts things with the open strings, but things quickly devolve into a failed and garbled attempt. Rather than try to salvage things and keep going, he rushes over to a mic to apologize for fucking it up and blame it on the desert heat.

“Sorry guys, I did it again. I screwed it up again! I’m gonna play it again for you guys!

“You know it’s really fucking hot in the desert.”

Lars got in on the bit, trying to jokingly cool Kirk off with a towel. Hammett eventually got there, leading into the average thrash fan’s pee break song.

This isn’t the first time Hammett’s flubbed the intro. On the opening night of the North American leg of the M72 World Tour, he similarly messed up in front of thousands of people at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

As for the rest of Metallica’s set, it was a mesh of old and new tracks, with most of their discography represented. Only tracks from Load and St. Anger were missing from the entire proceedings.

With the Power Trip Festival now in the books, Metallica’s got two more stops on its M72 North American leg. Shows are currently slated for November 3 and November 5 in St. Louis and November 10 and November 12 in Detroit. For the full list of M72 World Tour dates, be sure to scroll down past the videos.
