Gojira’s Mario Duplantier Says the Next Album “Is Going To Be Heavier” Than Fortitude

Environmental issues continue to running amok across the world? Check. Injustices against indigenous people happening on a daily basis? Check. Too many fucking people stuffing meat into their ravenous gobs? Check. Sounds like conditions are perfect for another Gojira album.

During a recent interview with Colombia’s El Expreso Del Rock (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), drummer Mario Duplantier revealed that the band is not only working on new material, but that they’re aiming to iterate on their 2021 release, Fortitude.

“Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. We work on new stuff for a long time, actually. We have a lot, a lot, a lot of ideas. We have structures of new songs. But we are so picky that we really want to take this time to drop something very unique. And why not having more songs to record? Instead of having 10 songs, maybe have like 15 songs; I don’t know. But we are working on it very hard. But it’s a bit early in the process to talk about the date of release and all that. But what I can tell is it’s on a good way. We are very proud of what we have right now.”

Duplantier confirmed that the tracks they’ve already laid down for the new album were “different” compared to those found on Fortitude, but said it was ultimately “a bit early to say but I have a feeling it is going to be heavier.”

Heavier? Now you have my attention, good sir.

You may or may not recall, but Gojira’s been super busy for a while now just touring with the likes of Mastodon and Lorna Shore in recent months. It was during those times on the road, Duplantier said, that the band was actually working on the new album.

“We did work on tour a lot, actually, because we were touring so much that we share ideas and we jammed a little bit in dressing room. And then, yeah, we’re working in New York, in France. It’s our secret formula, but we send ideas to each other. We jam together sometimes. But definitely most of the work will be done in New York.”

We’re still a while away from new Gojira, but it’s always exciting to know new shit’s on the horizon.
