Jay Weinberg Officially Joins Suicidal Tendencies

Former Slipknot drummer and Laura Jane Grace’s favorite ex-bandmate Jay Weinberg has officially found a new musical home, as he just announced in the last hour or so that he’s taking over as the full-time drummer for Suicidal Tendencies.

In Weinberg’s statement, the drummer said he was excited to officially get started next week. After losing his dream job not too long ago to landing this, it’s gotta feel particularly good for the dude.

“When I think of the culture and community of heavy music that I’ve loved and considered my creative home for 20 years, I think of Suicidal Tendencies: a foundational pillar and source of inspiration ever since I fell in love with punk, metal, and hardcore.

“Having toured and played shows together all over the world, I’ve been so fortunate to become friends with my musical heroes who have been a part of this band’s incredible history.

“It’s an absolute honor and privilege to play with Suicidal Tendencies, and I can’t wait to start this incredibly exciting new chapter in just one week. See you all in the pit!”

The news comes months after he was unceremoniously ousted from Slipknot for what the band said was a “creative decision.” Since then he’s had surgery, recovered, and began playing with Suicidal Tendencies-adjacent (at least in my mind) band Infectious Grooves. Looking back, that assignment to fill in for Avenged Sevenfold‘s Brooks Wackerman might have been a try out for the Suicidal gig.

As the newest member of Suicidal Tendencies, Weinberg joins the iconic California crossover thrash outfit with vocalist Mike Muir, Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman, and Tye Trujillo, whose dad you may know bass plays in Metallica.

Weinberg will play a handful of shows with Infectious Grooves starting later this month, having recently recorded a new song with them. What happens after that with Suicidal Tendencies remains to be seen.
