The Funeral Portrait Respond to Backlash Over Their Tour with Marilyn Manson

The MetalSucks readership may be willing to give Marilyn Manson a second chance, but there’s still a large swathe of the general public that still holds the shock rocker in contempt over his long-running legal battles and allegations of sexual abuse. The anger is so potent, in fact, that bands associating themselves with him on upcoming live dates are catching heat.

Such has been the case for emo rock group The Funeral Portrait, who was recently announced to be opening for two of the three shows that Manson will be headlining later this year. After revealing that they’d be playing before the shock rocker at both the August 17 show at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago and the September 1 show at the Grand Theater at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, fans took to social media to put the band on blast.

That apparently didn’t sit too well with the band’s bassist Rob Weston, who responded to criticism in several now deleted tweets. Of course, the internet is forever, so screenshots of his responses have been making the rounds, so we know that he wasn’t too thrilled. In one example, he defended the decision to play a show with a legacy act like Manson, no matter how tainted his public perception may be.

“I’m sorry my band that has consistently played 200 cap venues for 7 years + has a chance open shows in front of thousands of people and people wanna be upset by it. If you truly know the people we are and you know the grind we’ve been on, you wouldn’t be mad.”

“If what we are doing isn’t affecting your life personally, then why get mad about it? You weren’t a fan before, and that’s fine. No one is forcing anyone to go to these shows.”

Honestly, that feels like a sensible response. Smaller bands have it hard out there, so why not take the opportunity to play a big show when that chance arises?

Unfortunately like most things on the internet, chuds ruin everything, with at least one fan praising Weston for not being “woke.” So yeah, if that’s really where Weston’s feelings lie that’s kinda gross, given the fact that a lot of the allegations against Manson are pretty fucking gross if true.
