POLL: WILL NEW ALICE IN CHAINS MATERIAL BE ANY GOOD?

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 at 11:00am by

In a recent interview with MTV.com, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains hinted at the possibility of new AIC material in 2008. “Definitely possibly. I don’t think you can put a time limit on it, because first we have to come up with a record we’re satisfied with, and I think we can do that.” Cantrell continues, “The body of stuff that’s been coming out so far — all the riffs and song ideas — are really cool. It’s really aggressive and everything Alice was, but it’s moved on into a different thing too. It’s [indicative of the] transformation of this band. The dynamic is different, and it should be. But Mike, Sean and I, we’re still here. We’re still a big part of how this band sounds. The elements that remain and the element that William [Duvall, new singer] brings to the band are powerful things. I couldn’t put a time on it, but I can tell you that [writing songs] is what we are working toward. We’re gathering material and doing other business to help this band move forward.”

So, are you sold? Will any possible new Alice material be any good?

I’ll admit that I was pleasantly surprised with how great AIC sounded when I saw them live last year. That said, I’m skeptical about a new record. I don’t know that a Duvall-fronted version can stir up the darkness that the version we know and love did. It may very well rock, but it won’t be the same thing. I’d rather they just call the band something different.

Based on Jerry Cantrell’s solo album, it should still be good. Cantrell can write intriguing music and is the best backup/co-vocalist in rock today.

And Vince, thank you for NOT using the overused, and mostly inaccurate term “grunge”. Damn that word was misused throughout the ’90s. Of all those Seattle bands, really only Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger was truly grungy. Pearl Jam was just rock. AIC was metal-tinged rock. All the rest were variations on alt/metal/rock/punk. And none of them sounded much like each other. It was just unfortunate they all dressed in flannel and ripped shorts.

I also saw AIC over the summer and despite my skepticism, I must admit, the new singer seriously held his own, he most definitely did the old material justice. So I’d be willing to check out any new stuff from AIC, sure.

I voted for 1. But what I mean is: I would be impressed if it is better than Facelift, and disappointed if it is worse than the self-titled. As long as it avoids the latter, i think 1 applies.

i think they should bring in another guitarist and jerry should pick up the vocals. as long as what they write is in his range, he should be able to sing and play guitar live, sometimes only singing with the other guitar player covering him if it takes that much focus. they could avoid playing the older stuff (since they’ve already got that out of their system) that he can’t sing (man in the box, rooster…the upper register songs) unless they have a special guest on hand that can. i know that’s extremely similar to jerry’s solo career setup, but let us face it…80% of material from boggy depot and degradation trip would have been AIC albums if layne had already passed away or had cleaned up his act. jerry tried really hard to mimic layne’s style on some of the vocal takes on degradation trip.
i had the chance to see AIC unplugged in st. louis back in september, but i opted out knowing that it would be lacking the magic of the original 1996 performance. im a die-hard AIC fan and that’s the way i feel…i remember i used to get made fun of for having all of their albums back in the late 1990′s and then layne died in 2002 and although its not as dramatic, the whole jimi hendrix thing happened-everyone realized how good their music was after layne died. now i see fucking 16 year old girls wearing their shirts that they bought from hot topic….

Hell no. Layne Staley was the heart and soul of Alice in Chains. All these guys are doing is beating a dead horse.
