Johan SantanaOh. My. God. Omar Minaya and The Metal Mets strike again!! USA Today reports that the Mets have traded for Twins pitcher Johan Santana, in exchange for Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Deolis Guerra. The deal is pending a physical and the Mets signing Santana beyond 2008 within a 72 hour window. This is big. Huge… a no-brainer!! Bigger than the dudes from Crowbar and Tad combined!

And now back to your regularly scheduled Metal programming. Umm… here’s some video of Mike Piazza performing with Overkill a few years ago.

Yeah, well I’m a Minnesotan, and Santana is on the downhill slope. He’s not the spitfire pitcher he once was and has already had to deal with physical problems regarding his pitching arm.

I’m thinkin’ we got the better end of the deal, particularly in the long run. ;P

Not saying he doesn’t still have the ability to pitch a no-hitter – the guy’s amazing. But I’m betting his shelf-life has been cut in half.

Well I’m a huge mets fan, and mr. Minnesotan, you know you didn’t get the better end of this deal. Santana is only 29 which gives him 5 years of elite pitching before a possible decline. In addition, guys like Clemens, Ryan, Glavine, Maddux have been able to pitch into their 40s (HGH or no, thats impressive), and the fact that his best pitch is a CHANGEUP, I think we’re all set givin him $140 million for a few World Series titles. The guy is the best pitcher in baseball and will KILL in the National League. He may reach 300 Ks this year. I mean, we didn’t have to give up a single star player or our top prospect (Gomez is nothin special). Good luck finding out if Mulvey or Humber are going to pan out, I’ll take the ace in the hole.

All that being said I respect the Twins organization and don’t like the makeup of MLB where the Twins have to part with a star player because they cannot afford him. I hope some of those prospects pan out and the Twins are able to compete in future years as a result. Still, I’m happy to have Johan to help us forget about the historic collapse…

As a Phillies fan, this makes things a little more interesting, but many Mets fans think that Santana is going to be their savior and think that this makes them unstoppable. I realize the mets are a decent team, but as we saw last year, they need ALOT more then just this guy to save them.

  • Dude Manbro

Fantastic trade for the Mets, Santana is EXACTLY what they needed most, a no.1 ace starter. One of the top three trades in Met history, easily.

Yeah but we (the Twins) have done this same thing before. We traded Frank Viola (star pitcher) years ago for a lump of unproven players. Two of those players led us to a World Series championship. We did it one other time as well, though I forget when and with whom.

Like I said, Santana has already had some physical problems. Hopefully he can get the Mets a Championship in the near future. But you have to remember, he can’t pitch all the games in the series. One man on a baseball team does not win a pennant. Part of the reason we traded him.

Oh, and I’m actually a Mets fan too. I still proudly display my 1986, gold leaf enhanced World Champions mug in my home. That was the same year the Giants won the Super Bowl. I’m actually a native New Yorker, and most of my family still lives on Long Island.

But the trade still kinda stings. We (Minnesotans) have been hemorrhaging star players in every sport lately (Garnett was a tough pill), so it’s tough to be a Minnesota sports fan these days.

I’ll take the mets starters over the PHI starters in a landslide. I’ll take the philly lineup over the mets lineup in a close call. I’ll take the mets bullpen over the PHI bullpen in a solid victory. Braves, marlins, and nationals wont compete this year (maybe braves, but I doubt it). I think the NL is going to be won by the Mets or Arizona, Rockies, or maybe a sneak move by the Brew Crew or Cubs. Its wide open, but I think the addition of Santana gives the mets a head up on all of those teams.

I’m a phillies fan and I definitely think it’s an amazing deal for the Mets. Not sure how anyone from Minnesota could possibly think this is good for them and that Johan is in a downslide. Minnesota screwed around playing games with the Yankees and Red Sox trying to get more than they could. Instead they should have taken a Sox deal with Ellsbury or Lester and gotten much better prospects than this. None of these guys from the Mets are 5 tool or can’t miss pitchers. Sure, they will likely pan out, but the Red Sox and Yankees guys almost certainly will become stars.

Seth, don’t count out us. We are the defending East champs now. You’ve gotten MUCH better with Johan but there’s still 130 other games to win before you go writing a check for world series tickets. Our staff is not that far behind yours, our bullpen is better than last year and we absolutely are a better hitting and defensive team than the Mets. You’re going to have a race on your hands and until you come out on top again, you’re still chasing us.
