SAY, WHAT THE FUCK DID EVER HAPPEN TO CHUCK MOSELY?

chuck.jpgAfter briefly writing about pre-Mike Patton Faith No More singer Chuck Mosely earlier this month, I got to wondering: what the flying fuck ever happened to Mosely, anyways? I was purely curious, mind you; I’m sure there’s some nut case out there who only recognized Mosely as the one true front man for FNM, but I ain’t him. Still, there are songs from the Mosely years (Introduce Yourself and We Care A Lot) that I greatly enjoy, and it occurred to me that I never even knew, really, why Mosely had left the band (or had been fired from the band?).

So I did what any good American journalist would do, and headed over to Mosely’s Wikipedia page. Here’s the short version of Mosely’s life post-FNM…

“Chuck parted ways with FNM in 1988 for a number of reasons, including creative differences with his band members and rumors of substance abuse.

“In 1990 Mosely began a stint as lead singer in revered hardcore punk band, Bad Brains. He performed at nearly sixty shows in the United States and Europe before leaving the band in January of 1992.

“Mosely immediately went on to form a new band, Cement. They released two albums… During the first week of what was to be a year-long tour… the band’s driver fell asleep at the wheel causing a major accident. Chuck spent a year recovering from a broken back, the tour was canceled, and the album was, subsequently, shelved.

“Mosely relocated to Cleveland, Ohio in March of 1996. He has spent the last several years writing and compiling new material while raising his two daughters Sophie and Erica.”

Seriously? Chuck Mosely was in fucking Bad Brains? How the fucking fuck did I not know that?

ANYWAY, I can’t find any songs or videos for this band Cement, nor can I find any video or recordings of Mosely’s stint with Bad Brains; so since we already posted the video for the best Mosely-era FNM tune, “We Care a Lot,” here’s the video for Faith No Mosely’s “Anne’s Song,” and, just for shits n’ giggles, footage of Patton performing “We Care a Lot.”

    Did Patton forget the lyrics?

I’m sure there’s some nut case out there who only recognized Mosely as the one true front man for FNM, but I ain’t him. That would be me. I have sung Chuck’s praises here a few times only to be chastised by those severely out of the loop. Mike Patton-FNM does not even come close to the brilliance that was Chuck Mosely.

Not Patton’s best sing on that one.

I saw FNM on this tour. They also played Introduce Yourself, which I thought was pretty cool.

Limp Bizkit opened for them. This was before everyone realized that Fred Durst was a tool.

  • ezra

I thought everyone knew Chuck was in Bad Brains.

  • Porkspam

for those not into patton he usually fucked around with lyrics like that.

there’s more than one nutcase out there who recognized Mosely as the one true front man for FNM.

we care a lot was the band’s darkest and moodiest album. its my favorite fnm album forsure.

ill admit that patton was great in fnm too. but id like to let his minions of fanboys out there know that he only built on mosley’s style. anyone with half a brain can notice the similarities.

i wonder what fishbone fans have to say about patton. ever compare fishbone to early mr bungle? oh boy…

i guess he has a talent for building on other vocalists styles.

oh and taking credit for it too!

For those interested, Chuck Mosley is in the studio right now finishing up what was to be, at one time, the Cement album. His record will be released sometime around March 2009, with a tour planned for shortly after.

I know this because I have played and will be playing shows with him as a member of his backup band. As a matter of fact, he will be appearing this Friday night at The Factory in Cleveland.

A rough mix of one of the cuts from the new LP is also up on his new MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/chuckmosleyvua along with some new promo shots.

Chuck is back in action and better than ever.

I am a Chuck Mosely fan.

1985-87 Chuck Mosely-era Faith No More had a wonderful, magical, mystical quality.

Although there were many people doing similar things beforehand, and things that would stream in from different angles…that era Faith No More was a brilliant nexus point of street level RUN DMC style beats, rapped and Punk style vocals, Hardcore and Metal guitar, early 80′s synthesizers and Skate Punk style…all existing in some brilliant, arcane, spiritual, mystical fringe…yet also sounding totally fresh, shiny and brilliant.

I first saw them as a snippet on our most popular saturday night variety show.

With all the things goin on in the 80′s Faith No More’s ‘Introduce Yourself’, and particularly “We Care A Lot” was a fantastic meeting of street style, and high fashion…alternative, and mainstream.

That they thanked both Madonna and Metallica is fitting, and brilliant.

I’ve often said that “We Care A Lot” was the last classic record…though, yes, there have been some since…but there is definitely magic to that record.

Chuck Mosely’s voice and delivery is amazing…’flawed’, yes, like many great singers…but his whole approach and feel is brilliant, and so so fitting.

    And his personal style!
Chuck Mosely is one of my ultimate style icons.
Just look at him in the “We Care A Lot” video for a brilliant mish-mash image.
Street Punk, Hip Hop and New Romantic meet in a Day-Glo explosion of multi coloured shirt and tie and ‘skirt’, funky dread-locked mohawk, Boy George style braids and ribbons, classic Punk Rock leather jacket, All-Stars.
    Genius !

    Always an inspiration.

Then, a few (and a few thousand) years later, when I heard a radio DJ say a Faith No More tune was coming on, I waited with baited breathe, only to then hear ‘Epic’.
And ‘The Real Thing’(the REAL thing ??!) was a paint by numbers rehash, xeroxing most of the songs from ‘Introduce Yourself’.

With a weak, snide singer named Mike Patton, who also did a good/bad line in ripping off Anthony Kiedis.

And of course the band flowed in on some popularity as everything ‘marginal’ went mega mainstream in the 90′s(and beyond).

Mike Patton just tries so hard to come off as being weird, outre, and avant-garde.
Also putting out the worst CD’s on the Tzadik label.

Just a lot of vulgar, puerile, “shocking” stuff…that has made him king of the “weird”(?).

Not that there wasn’t a few good tunes during the Patton era of Faith No More…and ‘Angel Dust’ had a bit more of an original feel. I mean, there was some other good cats in the band!

But…never that fleeting magic that the 80′s, “We Care A Lot”, Chuck Mosely Faith Ho More had, and has.

And CEMENT was brilliant…those two albums are much better than all the rest of Faith No More’s releases.

Bless Chuck, and his family, wherever they are now.

Yes, I am a Chuck Mosely fan.

    I Care, A Lot !

Sorry about that mistake…Faith ‘Ho’ More indeed ! :)

As pepelebrou has said, Chuck Mosley is currently recording a new album at Ante Up Audio in Cleveland, Ohio, with multi-platinum award winning producer, mixer, recording engineer, and composer Michael Seifert. Seifert has worked with Bone Thugs, Dave Matthews, Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Fountains of Wayne, and several other artists. Mosley is on Seifert’s new Reversed Image Unlimited record label. To hear a new track from Chuck, check out http://www.myspace.com/chuckmosleyvua or http://www.reverbnation.com/chuckmosley. Chuck also has a webpage with a bio, photos, and a forum (www.chuckmosley.com). Keep checking back for the latest updates!

Axl Rosenberg, the writer of this article, certainly did not know much about Chuck, I knew everything without ever having to consult a “not usually right” Wikapedia – I saw some comments by the people, I try not to be opinionated nor bias as a writer, even though it’s tough, but here are some facts… FNM was from San Fran and had a lot of singers and different members before Chuck, including Mark Bowen (a song on “We care a Lot album) Courtney Love was the fist singer for FNM, they did record demos, never signed, they got Chuck, they signed and released “We Care A Lot” in ’85 which puts Chuck on the Map for the first “rap/rock metal” frontman EVER… The release didn’t go over big, because it was on a small label, yet were picked up by Warner. Bros shortly after and released the great “Introduce Yourself” which a new version of “We Care a Lot” with different lyrics was on, appeared several films, videos were made for “Anne’s Song” and “We care a lot” and I have a DVD with MTV Europe in the mid 80′s with interviews with the band, with Chuck and Jim while Chuck dressed as a woman, even a blond wig, and went on a racism rant that Jim tried to get out of, it included an MTV recorded concert. More bootlegs, video and audio are available. Their next album would be “The Real Thing” – the music was already recorded, yet they finally kicked out Chuck because of drug use, he is clean today, the last song he recorded with them appeared on THE REAL THING – it was called “New Improved Song” – I’m confident it’s easy to access now, it became “The morning After” on that album, of course different lyrics. So FNM were stuck with an album with no vocals. Jim Martin was really taken with a singer from a band that opened for them called Mr Bungle. They were also from San Fran. My friend Joe (guitarist from Dead Milkmen) has the original cassette demo of Bungle’s “Goddammit I love America!” with the cover from when they opened for the Milkmen. Patton agreed to do vocal duties, “If I can still be in Bungle.” They agreed. “Epic” became a big hit, along with “From out of Nowhere” and “Falling to Pieces” a cover of “War Pigs” was on that, Mosley did that cover first, also, the NESTLES song Patton did in parts live were taken from the Mosley era song they did, Patton covered most all of the originals, but never put one on an album, as he said, “I liked Chuck’s version better” — Mosely had joined Bad Brains for a little while but unfortunately never recorded with them, and in his first album with Cement he showed some signs of resentment with lines like “Everybody’s getting rich on the road that I paved.” The second Cement album was “The man with the action hair” – after that album, and I’m not sure what time frame, but they were touring, bus accident, band broke up. Chuck also was in a band called “Haircuts that kill” – to my knowledge they never released, or had distribution at least, for even a demo, as I never got my hands on one. Joe from the Milkmen told me years back, this is, that he went to Cleveland and hung with Chuck at his BBQ and Chuck gave him a demo of some songs he did, just him and acoustic guitar, his job at the time was “Father and husband” – Joe said the cassette was great, he lent it to his roommate, my friend Brian (Touch me Zoo, Town Managers, The Cheesies, Trouble Everyday, No! Go! Tell!), took the tape and, instead of “Dubbing’ erased the tape. Yeah. So anyway, I heard for a while Chucks “VUA” – Vandals Ugainst Alitercy, which he found written in a bathroom stall and felt compelled to use it… recently, FNM, over 10 years after their demise, did a European tour, and Mike Patton invited Chuck Molsey to do the song “Reunited” – an oldies cover duet, but Chuck couldn’t get his VISA in time to travel to Europe and said he was upset and touched, however Jim Martin was not involved, who after Angel Dust, quit the band, when asked why, he said, “Two words. Mike Patton.” You could tell, musically, a HUGE difference between the albums “The Real Thing” and “Angel Dust” the first album where Mike Patton had musical input and it was after that, that Jim quit, and FNM went on to do the amazing album “King for a day… fool for a lifetime.” – it featured on guitar the guitarist from Mr. Bungle, and it was against Mike Patton’s wishes that he was involved, after the album, he was no longer in it, much rumors as to why, recently Puffy said, “That’s bullshit, it was a Patton-Trey thing.” Their next and final album would “Album of the year” and then the compilation “Who Cares a LOT” where Chuck Molsey was featured on three songs, and on the DVD, two videos. This past year, Chuck Mosley (with VUA) released “Will Rap over Hard Rock for Fast Food” and with it came a lot of good things, including openings for Korn, Jonathan Davis on a track, and Roddy Bottum featured on… get this… a new version of WE CARE A LOT, and it’s very good. MIke Patton went on with Mr. Bungle, then the band ended, and he is now in Fantomas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, and an Italian Band he front that I forget the name of, he started his own record company, “IPECAC” — to name a few, he’s released his projects Maldoror, The Executioners vs General Patton, Kaada and Patton, including working, releasing and performing with The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sepultura, John Zorn, kid 606 Buckethead, The Quemists, Lovage, Moonchild, Onitaba, and recently put out DVD concerts FANTOMAS./MELVINS BIG BAND and KAADA AND PATTON. There are many more, this is off the top of my head.

I am that nutcase. Patton’s cool, but better in Bungle. Chuck’s emotion always beat Pattons virtuosity for me.

    So there.
