NEW SONG MARKS YET ANOTHER NEW ERA FOR CAVE IN

Cave InYesterday I Tweeted thusly in a rage of excitement:

Holy crap new CAVE IN single available for purchase!!! http://tinyurl.com/nog86k

In April I reported the imminent Cave In reunion and wondered aloud what new material would sound like. Wonder no more. The new album Planets of Old will be released on 12″ only on July 28th via Hydra Head, and the new single “Retina Sees Rewind” is now available for purchase on iTunes.

So nevermind the facts; is it any good?

The verdict: it sounds just like Cave In, but a whole new era of the band. The new song harkens back to no specific era of Cave In; not the proto-metalcore of Until Your Heart Stops, not the heavy atmospheric space-rock of Jupiter and Antenna, not the post-rock stonerdom of Perfect Pitch Black. It’s something new entirely, which is great because Cave In have never, ever repeated themselves creatively. It’s fast, it’s rockin’ and Steve Brodsky is singing (no screams); and it’s only two and a half minutes long. I’m not sure I really love this song but it’s definitely good, and the verdict is certainly out until the full album becomes available.
