HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN LENNON

Friday, October 9th, 2009 at 3:12pm by

He would have been 69 years old today.

I did an informal poll on Twitter to find good metal covers of Beatles songs, and while a number of people made creative suggestions and a lot of people were all into Beatallica n’ shit, the general consensus seemed to be that Motley Crue’s version of “Helter Skelter” still reigns supreme. So without further adieu…

Feel free to discuss your own favorite metal versions of songs originally by The Beatles below.

Nothing about motley crue is good. way to insult the memory of the Beatles and John Lennon.

    That was a Paul song.

Ha! Not only was it a Paul song, it was one of his very best songs

      • http://myspace.com/shepherdsgatemusic,myspace.com/burymeinsmokemusic Michael “The Armenian Demon” Fenton

        Agreed!

        • DidgeryDo

He was wrong about the name but he was right about it being an insult.

To quote the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, “I’m just here to make sure he’s dead!”

  • ZapBranigan

Thrice recorded a version of Helter Skelter that they released online with their new album. It’s way better than this shit.

  • Kuranes

Really? That’s the best Beatles cover you could come up with?

On that I like is “Day Tripper (Medley)” from Type O Negative’s “World Coming Down” album. There was also a “Butchering the Beatles” cover album that had Lemmy and others on it.

    • http://buttor.blogspot.com Buttor

yeah, day tripper by type o is a nice one

  • major

here’s a fifth for your ass

  • Sweeney

I hope that “adieu” you snuck in there is a joke.

Sorry, as always, for being a dicknose.

    • lheartdrugs

it’s “ado” right? have i been writing it wrong all these years?

ps. Spineshank’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” rocks. but that’s a George song.

didn’t somebody metal do “I Am The Walrus”?

      • Sweeney

Yep, as in “Much Ado About Nothing.”

Maybe he was saying “adieu” again to John.

  • John

Godhead- As my guitar gently weeps (please note sarcasm)

    • http://www.myspace.com/uglydirge aaron m.

      they also covered eleanor rigby.

  • orbital

  • Matthew Grant Anson

    Coroner’s I Want You (She’s So Heavy).

    • lheartdrugs

      • crapper

        thats that goood shit

    • Trux

      I totally second that !

    • Hollowman

They also covered Hendrix’s Purple Haze. I think. They weren’t your typical shit eater’s metal.

  • Phil

Suplecs- I want you (She’s so heavy)= awesome!

  • Tim

SOOO happy to share John’s birthday, happy birthday to us bud!

  • canea

    Glad those days are over.

  • rattlehead

Haven’t any metal bands covered “happiness is a warm gun”? That would be the perfect Beatles song for a metal band to cover.

  • kazz

How is it that the Beatles version of Helter Skelter is heavier and more “metal” than this “metal” cover?

    • Nate

Because helter skelter inspired heavy metal, and Motley Crue are responsible for killing it in a portion of the 80s.

    • http://uponwingsofblack.blogspot.com/ \m/Eluveitie\m/

And The Who’s “I Can See For Miles” is heavier and more metal than any version of “Helter Skelter”

  • Sammy

Ha! Back when Mars could actually hold up a Les Paul. And how fucking thin is that sound? Vince, you used to have a metabolism!

  • Nick D
  • Trux

Also Trouble’s Come Together is a good one.

  • Fufkin

Dear god, how to honour a legend!

    1. It wasn’t even a Lennon song.
    2. Motley Crue are abysmal, as is their cover.
    3. Soundgarden’s Come Together is better than Trouble’s

  • Babieater

UMM what About STPs Revolution cover???

Coroner covering “She’s so Heavy” is the best I’ve ever heard.
Boris/Merzbow covering “I Am The Walrus” is amazing.
Some of the tracks on Butchering the Beatles: A Headbashing Tribute album (which featured the likes of Lemmy, Alice Cooper, Tim “Ripper” Owens, Duff McKagan, and the bearded one himself, Billy Gibbons) were pretty good.

  • Killdozere666

hell no – PAIN’s cover of eleanor rigby is phenominal
