WHO ARE WE MAD AT?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

anger

Just a question, not meaning to be a presumptuous dick or anything, but seriously… as metal heads, who are we pissed at? I hear a lot about “God” or “Satan,” but I’m kind of of the mindset that both of those things are illusions and metaphors based on a prehistoric view on what the true nature of infinite reality is. So does that mean we’re mad at ourselves ultimately?

Maybe we’re all mad at our dads?

Money? Sex? Each other? “The man?” That man over there? Me? Her? Stupid people? Drugs? Our own stupidity? Aardvarks?

Maybe as entities we are predisposed to aggression and evolutionarily, we’re hung up on the need to actualize it.

Either way, right or wrong… rawwwr, no?

Aww yeah. As a species, and especially among the hominids, we’re crazy programmed for violence. Which is a little weird considering we’re also programmed to be monogomous, and have low levels of sexual dimorphism to boot. Some people think it’s because we’re the most social animal, as well as being a hunting species. We’re built for violence, in many ways, and I’m glad we’re all listening to Pig Destroyer instead of manifesting our instincts in gangs, or the Hitler youth, or whatever. Metal is, in a way, the ultimate tool (not just a statement, mind you), for pacifism. It’s the pinnacle of human acheivement. HUAH!!

We are entitled to be angry because its a basic human emotion. Life sucks for everyone from time to time, anger is a way some people deal with the cards they are handed. It all comes down to how we chose to deal with our anger.

  • Chris Fuqua

Metal represents power. And aggression in music usually has a sound distinct from any other. I don’t get the rush of feelings from a rap beat or opera vocalist that I do from heavy powerful music. Dark orchestras do the same thing for me but Metal is still number 1 in my book. I’m a sucker for mixing the two.

When I was young, I thought it rebellious and humorous to don a Cannibal Corpse Butchered at Birth shirt. Throughout the years, I was never angry, I just dug the power and intensity of the music. Nowadays you can find many moods through what are, arguably metal bands. I’ll listen to Nile while I’m hitting the gym; or I’ll listen to Cynic if I want to transcend consciousness. If I listen to depressing music like Katatonia, its amazing that I’ll end up feeling uplifted; a complete reversal of its intention. That’s what I love about everything that teeters on or around the metal genre. There are many moods to be found, fitting for every moment of the day.

    • Gallo666

That`s true I don`t think all metal is about being angry. That`s too cliched I guess for the present time. Moreover, there are metal bands out there that do not seem to be projecting anger in anyway, take for example bands like Drudkh. i don`t see any anger in there. Of course some would claim that grim guttural screams are filled with anger but what do I know??

      • BadMongoMan

Some of the most meaningful and genuinely happy moments of my life has been doing the dishes/walking to school/driving a car/whatever while listening to angry, agressive heavy metal. Never once has this music made me feel bad.

Statement: NO ONE likes to listen to music that makes them feel bad. If I have a bad day and i listen to metal it’s because I know that it makes me feel better. not worse.

Even the emo kids listening to emo-rock don’t feel bad. I bet a GAZILLION dollars that they feel good because the music resonates with their state of mind.

The only kind of hevy metal that doesn’t make me feel good is bad heavy metal.

It is within most species not to settle, to always try to expand, to overtake the next resource. Humans have the particularity to have an “advanced” [LOL] communication system and we can express our anger/frustration in other ways that simple violent aggression: sports, art, etc … Metal music is just a medium among others.

People frustrations and anger often relates to the “want”: food, possessions, etc … the way we act on the “wants” is what differenciates each of us. Some go to church, some rob or kill, some become workaholics, some find diversions [drugs, violent sports], etc: Stephen Kings writes freaky books, Devin Townsend makes crazy music, Pat Robertson chastizes, Snoop Dog does dope, Mike Tyson beats people up, etc …

    My $0.02!

Metal can be larger than life and, for me, was larger than my enemies.

When those enemies flog, cross and spit on you – diminishing you from whence you were – through metal you can re-emerge, reinstate yourself as a titan, a dominant male powerful enough to smite your enemies with bloody axe and roar.

In metal you can soak your enemies in the bloods of their families and laugh as you tip a bulbous, rhino-sized goblet to pour frothing alcohol into your mouth and down your dwarven-haired chin. And you can laugh again when you realize what fun it is to ask: “which of these liquids is more intoxicating?” Boiling enemy soup? Or spinny sacred lust tonic?

I think you hit the nail on the head that we are predisposed to be angry at ‘stuff’. Whatever it may be. A dude in a suit may get suddenly angry at a badly made cappucino; a metal head may get angry at ‘the man’ – at the very concept of a system of control larger and more powerful than him – its institutions, doctrinal systems, laws and imposed limitations.

In some ways I think you can liken many metalheads to atheists. I.e. many are relatively free-thinking who ultimately do know want to be ‘controlled’ – to be part of ‘the masses’ – So we form out our ‘mass’: metalheads.

Ultimately, we seek emancipation and empowerment. ‘Metal’ offers this.

P.s. Devin, are you ever coming to New Zealand? We’ve got some mighty fine looking sheep down here! Oh, and some nice scenery. Can’t forget the scenery!

all life is suffering, someone once said. there are many ways to cope with that fact. anger is one, i guess. and there are many ways to be angry. writing/listening to metal songs is one of them. i think the fact that its pointed at god (be it an actual anthropomorphic diety or a clever/frightened metaphor) so often is a product of god being the figurehead of reality, creation, existence etc etc in our culture. metal is angry at existence for being so harsh, god’s just the middleman.

i think addicted is about a different way of dealing with life being so cruel. or, i dunno, that’s what i think its about. it goes to show that “metal” in the end is independent from anger (at least in this case).

I’ll tell you who I’m angry at: Human fucking beings. They are selfish, greedy, manipulative, horrid creatures who care nothing for the planet they live on or even for each other. All they care about is money, their own convenience, and which celebrity needs VH1′s help to get laid THIS week. I’m angry because I wake up every morning am forced to live with the fact that 1,000 miles away, corporate lobbyists are deciding my nation’s future with “campaign donations” and expensive lunch dates. II’m angry because people try to inhibit the advancements of our society every day because something that wasn’t invented 2,000 years ago isn’t “part of God’s plan” and therefore is “sinful” and I’m expected to respect and comply with these beliefs because the same people have us all convinced that this is somehow a “Christian Nation.” I’m angry because Wal Mart destroys small businesses and endorses horrible business practices, but everybody praises them for their “low prices :D” I’m angry because in a free-market economy, where bad business practices are supposed to fail, some greedy douche cougars fucked up and my fellow countrymen had to pay them $720 Billion which they spent on bigger houses and cars instead of fixing their mistakes. I’m angry because 8 years ago my government hoodwinked everyone into waging this holy war for oil and influence in the middle east that doesn’t look like it will ever stop until 1)every muslim is dead or 2)america can’t borrow another dollar to fuel its war machine. I’m angry that greedy doctors and insurance companies are trying to keep us the only developped nation withouth universal healthcare. I’m angry that my government violates human rights and tortures people. I’m angry that my government gives endless aid to a rogue state (Israel) that is trying to do to the Palestinians what we did to the native americans. I could continue but I think you’ve stopped reading by now.

Let it flow son, let it flow!

If it makes you feel any better, I too become angry at your state for those things at times. But there have always been imperial powers, and there likely always will be for as long as artificial borders exist and we allow power to aggregate into the hands of a few.

When in doubt chuck on some Slayer or listen to Bill Hicks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kenneth-Blair-Griffin/519347011 Kenneth Blair Griffin

I agree with you mostly. Except the walmart thing, even if Walmart was gone forever, other big stores (K-mart, Lowes, Food lion) would still destroy the smaller competition. And all those big stores only got there because they grew from small family owned stores. It’s just “progress”, you can’t really do much to stop it, unless you could reset it.

Beyond that, don’t forget, how the people who make laws in congress, don’t know everything about what they pass into law. They go through school to become politicians, all the information they receive about a bill is given to them by groups, insiders, news, and etc. The fact that we have people making decisions on things like the state of the Internet, when half of them probly think the CPU is the whole fucking computer, bothers the god damn fucking hell out of me. All they know is a few things they picked up on the way, and what they are told/ feel like researching.

    d00shc00gr, cool story bro.

humans also made you that keyboard, that mouse, that computer, supply your internet, maintain every bit of technology you use or own. humans are great most of the time, just better yourself so you’re not stuck next to a bunch of dipshits, although your results may vary.

I guess when it comes to being pissed as a precursor to sweet, funky melodies, the main thing that will do it is my neighbor, facebook infatuation, consistency. consistency is good, but you should never be consistent with your passions. if you love music, don’t just sit there and listen to it all the time. make some, try it out, go see a show, SOMETHING! if you love movies, don’t sit on the couch watching them all day, go buy a video camera, write a script, something!

lots of things bug me but what pisses me off are things that people can easily change but refuse to because the only thin easier is staying exactly the same.

to me, the agression and anger in metal that attracts me to it is primarily a biological thing. As humans, we are predisposed towards aggression. We are after all, just animals. albeit slightly more sophisticated, but animals none the less.

I think there’s a difference between anger and aggression, the latter meaning “overt or suppressed hostility, either innate or resulting from continued frustration and directed outward or against oneself.” in my case, metal totally gets out my aggression that i feel i otherwise cannot express. to me, metal is completely empowering. its power makes me feel powerful. i know metal is typically white dude music, but for me it channels the rage i feel as a woman of color, who has experienced childhood trauma, discrimination and prejudice (subtle and overt, on a constant basis), invisibility, etc. it’s a very personal experience, i suppose, which sometimes makes the live experience a bit disconcerting, because i do not relate at all to the majority of metal fans (and the bands, for that matter). i guess i live in a bubble.

I don’t know, I think The Drapery Falls by Opeth conveys sadness better than any blues song, and Triumph by Devy sounds happier than any pop song. Metal is just fucking passionate music IMO. You can have a good melody or rhythm and use it in any genre, and it’ll generally have the same mood – it’s just that in most genres it’s a melody you observe and think “I like that melody”, whereas in metal it’s a giant neon melody with bells hanging off it that comes and hits you in the face.

  • SourDeez

Metal to me has never necessarily been about anger or hatred. When I’m pissed off, I tend to listen to more relaxing shit to calm me down. Metal is about energy. It’s about headbanging and those moments that just make you raise up your fists. It’s fuck yeah music, not fuck no music. Sure, I get pissed off, but it has absolutely nothing to do with metal, and my love of metal has nothing to do with my anger. Metal, to me, is about feeling like you’ve got the world by the sack, in a positive way.

If I could be angry at anything I’m sure I’d be able to channel it into something productive. As it is I’m just pitiful towards things/people/actions and that’s all I can muster. Fuck, I don’t have time to waste getting angry, I’m too busy trying to make enough time in my life to play Xbox and listen to music on my hifi without having to do household chores. See, I even pity myself. And if that’s my way of getting angry perhaps I AM pissed at myself and I just can’t get angry at myself so I just pity myself. And hell, life’s too short for self-pity, isn’t it? If you can’t laugh at yourself then you’ve lost the game.
