A METAL BAND THAT’S NAMED AFTER AN R. KELLY TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET CHARACTER?

chonNot quite, but that’s the first thought that popped into my head when the MetalSucks reader known simply as “J” sent us a link to the San Diego-based Chon. While Chon might not have the style, grace or charisma of the aforementioned Twan, they’ve got all sorts of wicked chops that fans of more technically-minded metal should love.*

Chon play semi-frenetic, jazz-tinged instru-metal not unlike that of Lye by Mistake, an insanely talented band whose debut album Fea Jur is worthy of far more praise than it’s gotten. Their sense of melody is more akin to that of Scale the Summit, yet another under-appreciated instru-metal band that released an album in 2009 (Vince’s year-end list, WHAT?), and there’s nary a trace of Sumeriancore/djent in the mix. It’s a fine combo, and it’s a unique sound.

Check out Chon. Twan won’t come over and hunt you down in a fit of jealousy.

*Trapped in the Closet is a modern masterpiece. I’m not joking or being ironic. It’s really an amazing piece of work. Don’t front.

Trapped in the Closet really is mind bogglingly unique. Sometimes they play the entire thing on the IFC channel.. I definitely recommend watching it. It’s Hilarious. R Kelly is the man

    • Keepitwolf

Trapped in The Closet is the shit…

      Chon is also the shit.

      • SourDeez

I dunno, I think Piss On You is the best song R. Kelly’s ever made.

I love these dudes. Been a fan for a while. Kinda strange to see them featured on MetalSucks.

  • Matt

Chon is so sick, probably the best unsigned band right now, so glad you posted them

    • Matt

Also, don’t forget the 1 measure breakdown they have haha

  • I’m not racist, but I hate Oceano

I really like this new trend where metalsucks is giving a lot of really great bands exposure instead of JUST talking about limp bizkit and crabcore.

    • lkgf09

you know the shitstain on the ass of the universe things are hilarious too

    Hell yea!

  • Connor

Did you just try to say that Fea Jur is Lye By Mistake’s debut album? Arrangements for Fulminating Vective is their debut, and in my opinion it’s WAY better than Fea Jur. Check it out, Vince.

    • Alex P.

I wanted it, but HMV only had Fea Jur, which I didn’t buy. I guess I’ll need to order it.

    • Tim

I prefer Fea Jur. I didn’t like the vocalist. I like these guys too, thanks MS!

I also thought Arrangements for Fulminating Vective was way better than Fea Jur, I feel like it’s lacking now without a vocalist

  • this band is sweet! thx metal sux

  • SourDeez

I just can’t get enough of instru-metal lately. I like vocals less and less every day.

    • Kevin

      I kinda agree with you..
Vocals sometimes all sound the same and covers up the instrumentals.

    • http://jordanmunson.wordpress.com Jordan Munson

      http://www.myspace.com/irepress — great instrumental rock/metal band

They kick ass too, it’s like super-intense math rock with a definite metal influence. And NO SINGER!!!! They’re just a 3 piece.

  • Matt

Also, the drummer was 11 when he recorded this, 11!

  • riffin

Chon has a kinda natural rock groove that sets them apart from other prog rock/metal bands out there. Makes them seem less pretentious and more satisfying to listen to.

  • BlakMetallistKrieg

Holy Fuck, we played a dinky teen center show with them just last year, It was like a “Battle of the Bands”. Absolutely no one saw cause thew went on at, like, 11 at night, but they won the “battle of the bands” thing, They ruled. Sweet that my local San Diego bros are getting their dues!!

    • BlakMetallistKrieg

…And remember that these shredders are HIGH SCHOOL KIDS!!!!!!

  • Tim

CHON is an mnemonic acronym for the four most common elements in living organisms: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.

  • festernaecus

“trapped in the close” is fucking hilarious. And that’s all. It’s far from a modern masterpiece. Same melody, same chord structure repeated endlessly, with awkwardly phrased lyrics jammed gracelessly into every empty space. A modern marketing masterpiece, maybe.

  • AATHD

Yeah, some more shit sandwich core.

    • Matt

did you even listen to it?
      It’s nowhere near core.

  • oBESTIALo

holy shit i saw these guys live(im from sd) they opened for horse the band, amazing guitar skillz

  • The Rev’rend

*Trapped in the Closet is a modern masterpiece. I’m not joking or being ironic. It’s really an amazing piece of work. Don’t front.

Dude, since the whole Suarez thing, it’s hard to take anything you guys say at face value. For all we know, you guys are ON Limp Bizkit’s Golden Cobra right now.

  • Braden

Awesome. I was going to tell you about these guys. Grew up around the same area. Dudes shred!

  • Mitchell

    I’ll front. Fuck R Kelly

  • Cameron

Haha, I just found this band on myspace a little while ago and now I’m seeing them on this site. That’s awesome shit.

  • Vikingfromhell890

This is like a instrumental version of old Fall of Troy. I approve.

  • Stabitha

    Pimp Lucius > Chon
