BARREN EARTH: METAL TO BE REALLY, REALLY COLD TO

Friday, December 11th, 2009 at 3:30pm by

barren earth - our twilight epDo you enjoy Agalloch? Daylight Dies? Swallow the Sun? Insomnium? How about Katatonia or Opeth?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then a) you have great taste in metal, b) you really owe it to yourself to check out Barren Earth, a dark melo-doom outfit from Finland (where else?). Simply put, Barren Earth incorporate the sonic elements and textures of all of the aforementioned melo-doom bands and add an Opethian twist to fuse the music into something that’s uniquely theirs. Barren Earth certainly aren’t re-inventing the melo-doom wheel, but they’re a damn fine addition. This is gloomy, doomy, epic, melancholic metal, the kind that’s best enjoyed in the barren, dark days of winter, snuggled under a blanket on your couch with a hot cup of cocoa. Or whiskey.

Check ‘em out on MySpace. Barren Earth’s new EP Our Twilight is out now via Peaceville Records.

    • Thrashbuster

I’ve gone through that Animals as Leaders album like 5 times over now. So good. Dude makes me wanna quit playing guitar.

Yeah, AAL is making my top ten list for the year.

Barren Earth is pretty damn good as well.

    THANK YOU Vince!

These guys are great, and the Opethian twist is something I don’t see mentioned very often, but it’s definitely the case here.

  • Sophus

This is the second Finnish melo-doom outfit this year to give their release the same name as a Stephanie Meyer book.

    I smell conspiracy, dammit.

(Will have to check this band out later though. Sounds awesome)

          It’s “Our Twilight” not “Twilight.”

          Pretty cool band.

  • Fufkin

Impressive stuff – Mikko’s vocals are developing all the time.

  • Slimboy Fats

you failed to mention that this band shares members with Swallow The Sun and Amorphis.

  • Mike

Thanks for the recommendation, this makes up for a lot of the shitty metalcore and deathcore recommendations that pop up here all the time.

Not bad. This is one of the few times I can remember a band’s description being so accurate. Sounds exactly as you would expect. God damn those Fins are some sullen and morose people.

  • Gaia

Oh. I emailed in like two months ago, to I think Axl, about Barren Earth.

  • Ziltoid

Duh, it’s from Peaceville. Pretty much anything that label puts out is quality music. I like it.
