THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN ARE STILL ONE OF THE BEST LIVE BANDS ON THE PLANET

Friday, March 12th, 2010 at 10:30am by

So last night I went to the kick-off date for The Dillinger Escape Plan’s headlining tour with Darkest Hour, Iwrestledabearonce, and Animals as Leaders. All of the bands were pretty great, but after the show, it was really hard to talk about any of them but DEP; their live act is just some other-level shit. They might be one of the last bands on the planet where their live show feels legitimately spontaneous and dangerous; there always comes at least one moment during their show when I become concerned that we might be watching the process of Greg Puciato killing himself. Even if you think you hate this band, you should go check them out, just to see how absolutely nuts it can get.

So. Rob from Metal Injection has a nifty new toy, called the Samson Zoom Q3, and he filmed the band doing their new song “Chinese Whispers” (we debuted the studio version earlier this week). You can view the footage below. The audio quality is actually better than the video quality, but it’s still pretty good. It was not one of the songs where I feared for Mr. Puciato’s life, but it still kicks major ass.

So they still have those bright lights that strobe into the crowd? I’m not going to see them again until they ditch that shit. I pay to see them, not white light that won’t go away when you close your eyes.

yeah, the whiteouts are way overdone. underoath uses them ad nauseum as well.

I really wish I could get into this band but sadly I can’t. I will check em out if they cruise through MA at some point though. I like crazy live shows. And hell if Darkest Hour is on the tour consider me there

They are okay live, I have seen them as far back as the late 90s through many different stages and as recent as a few months ago when they opened for Thursday. Probably overall in the past 12 or so years I have seen them 6-7 times, from big tours/festivals (Hellfest, Gigantour, WSOU Holiday Bash in 2002) to small shows (roller rink in 2000 with in flames, nevermore and Shadows Fall) They put on a much more intense show back in the day, way more so than they do today. Its still fun to watch them and they are still good live, but they are far from the best IMO. I have been 1000s of live bands and DEP while being good are not even close to the top.

    HATERS BE HATING LOL

i love this band. i love their stage presence. the OBJECTIVE is to fuck with the crowd right off the bat, forcing everyone to go completely apeshit when they hit the stage. they succeed in all level as far as im concerned.

anyone who doesnt like this band, i can totally understand. its a different style they’ve generated over the years, therefore, if you dont get it, you’re never gonna get it, but they are still existance and they have the fans that support them. this isnt no metalcore/deathcore/scene bullshit

this is The Dillinger Escape Plan, a band which no one can fuck around with. you can try, but the singer will win in a fight or in an arguement.

Ok, so you guys done being on their dick after this post for a while?

    • Dirtman73

Totally, Your mom’s been waiting in line for her turn. Move over MS!

  • I Am Asteroid

Last night was the third time I’ve seen them live and these guys still put on the greatest show I’ve ever seen. I’m so psyched they played this and “Mouth Of Ghosts”.

  • \m/

DEP… gimme a break. Even the audience seems to be bored to death

    • !?!

Yeah. Where is this “other-level shit”? I just see some dudes in a band flailing around in front of some pretty standard lighting (just like almost every other band does on tour). Now, I do enjoy their music and would probably pay to see them if given the chance. But I’d reserve “other-level shit” for a performance that’s.. you know… actually innovative.

This is one of the more relaxed songs though. When they play songs like Sunshine the Werewolf and 48% Burnt, they lose it, and so does the crowd.

Does Greg still do fire breathing?

I’m going to sue you for false reporting or something…

  • joshkid

I REALLY wanted to go to this show, but last minute things fucked up my plans. I’m pissed.

  • chris

last night was my 7th dillinger show and it ranked up there, WAY up there. probably top 2, maybe the best i have seen them. ehhhh idk, i saw them at blender 2 years ago headline and that shit was insane with greg blowing fire and everything. still, amazing show as always, every band fucking killed it, i was destructively high, and dep ripped my face off. not to mention that when greg jumped off of that platform to the left of the stage he landed right on me, that was nucking futs

  • Paddy O’Furniture

Projectile vomit splashing in my toilet > DEP’s singer.

  • Mike

I saw DEP live like 2 years ago. And so far i think they have the best on stage performance of any metal band.
The guitarist Weinman is like a fricking monkey, he could go jump the high jump in the olympics with the skills he has. And Puciato was climbing up and jumping down from everything he could find on stage.
    Crazy. Ass. Shit !

  • craver

amazing show, pretty pissed it was the same night as shrinebuilder and salome for $5!!!

  • Christian

I was there last night, and ive gotta say, ive seen dozens of metal shows throughout the years but never had the chance to see DEP play before..id always heard how crazy their shows were, the energy and alll that jazz..being a DEP fan, i knew i wasnt going to be dissapointed..i expected brutality from one of the most innovative and original bands in metal or any genre period…maaaannn once they came out and started playing, irving plaza went fucking ape shit!!!! ive never seen a venue literally EXPLODE for ANY band the way we all did for Dillinger last night….bands take note..its one thing to be a musician, its another to be a performer as well..this band can perform their music EFFORTLESSLY while flying through the air and climbing shit!!

also, all of you NYC metalheads, yeah im talking to you guys, this scene needs to be jump started, we need to start connecting and making friends at shows..we all share the same passion for music, fuck the status quo, lets start a citywide circle pit and show em how we have a good time!!!

  • Meekal

I’ve yet to see them live, and while this video doesn’t really make me want to any more than already, It doesn’t look to be in line with standard DEP craziness.

    Also, OH MY FUCK.
    THE NEW ALBUM IS AMAAAAAAAZING.

    • Sambo

      You already downloaded it?

      • Meekal

        I did.
But I also have a preorder for the special edition.

        • Connor

          link plz

          • Connor

            nevermind, got it.

  • http://metalsucks.net Wow

first, let me say that I’m not ripping on DEP. I just personally feel that they aren’t that special to me music wise. Obviously they have a decent fanbase they appeal to, but I don’t see any outstanding musicianship. And their live show was pretty crazy, but it’s not like they are the only band that gets the crowd going nuts

have the new cd, and its fucking good

  • MSalonen

I can totally see a growing Patton influence on Greg’s vocals. Which is absolutely a good thing.

  • Christian

bleehh why does everyone keep comparing Greg Puciato to Mike Patton? its like comparing ketchup and mustard, both can go on a burger and fries, but why fuck up a perfect combination of food and condiment?

    • MSalonen

That analogy doesn’t make any sense. It’s not like both of them (the figurative condiments) are on the same track (the figurative food).

  • ferocious_fetus

even if the new album blows (which I’m sure it won’t) Dillinger will still be my favorite band.
This vid doesn’t show it but I’ve seen the band destroy, instruments, venues and human bodies (themselves included) over the years. Awesome stuff.

  • Beauzaque

Saw them tonight in Toronto. Was good but they only played for a fucking hour. Also, Animals as Leaders was a no show, so there wasn’t enough awesome to counteract the suck of sitting through IWABO.
