“IN WAVES”: LET THE ARGUING ABOUT THE NEW TRIVIUM SONG BEGIN!

Monday, May 23rd, 2011 at 11:30am by

I’m gonna keep this short n’ sweet: Trivium released a new song over the weekend, called “In Waves,” and it’s pretty different for a Trivium song.

But that’s all I’m gonna say about it. I don’t want to influence the debate in the slightest. We got a lot of e-mails about it over the weekend, but, rather other oddly for MetalSucks Maniacs, no one expressed an opinion regarding the track’s quality. And given that this song sounds nothing like “Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr,” or “Entrance of the Conflagration,” or “Kirisute Gomen,” I am really, really, really curious to hear what you all think of it. I imagine opinions will be, as is always the case with this band, both passionate and disparate.

So check it below, then engage in some friendly debate in our comments section. The new Trivium album is supposed to come out August 9 on Roadrunner.

    Approve.

    • turds

when I saw that Heafy had cut his hair I was hoping for a return to the greatness of Drowned and Torn Asunder etc., alas I am disappointed.

  • themike

The song is great. It’s a progression, while at the same time going back to the roots people complained they left with the past few albums. The band will always be subjected to scrutiny due to their success, but at the end of the day, they know how to play and write a great song. I also think Colin Richardson did an absolutley amazing job like always on production.

    • The Dude

      I agree

  • Killface

Trivium is one of my favorite bands and I have to say that I’m pretty disapointed in this track. Hopefully this isnt a reflection of the rest of the album.

    • Reality Check

Totally agree. This song is flat. The structure is funky, it doesn’t really know where it wants to go. Trivium going through an identity crisis?

Hopefully it’s just because it’s an attempt at a single.

      • Human#2039482

        I farted?

      • The Dude

        Your Flat

  • Lard`

Meh, but then again I was never a fan of the band anyway

    • Tits McGhee

      1

  • Metalguy

That is a terrible guitar tone, and the increase in breakdowns and clean vocals isnt a good sign

    • cougar party

I am only listening to it on my crappy computer speakers, but yeah I am not digging that guitar tone.

Song doesn’t really light a fire under my ass. Hopefully the rest of the album is better.

      • Eddie Edd

agreed. its not bad, but it didn’t get me going either.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Bartolini/100001859397919 Tim Bartolini

Pretty decent. Not really a fan of Trivium, I’m only able to listen to them. This song is pretty decent concerning the melodies tho

  • ceth carter

I normally like Trivium but I found my self getting really bored really fast with that one. Not digging it.

    • dhdude

same-found myself listening to the first minute then skipping to see if it got any better. sound like they threw in too much as i lay dying shit in there

    • casey

the song isnt boring i cant stop listening to it and why are most of these comments saying that the song sucks because it doesnt!its the best song ever!

      • http://flickr.com/photos/weisquared/ lol

        lol

  • Strapping Young Lad

Haven’t listened to these dudes in a while; saying that, I really liked this tune. Nice and heavy with a good amount of chugging without feeling like Deathcore.

I might be picking this one up!

  • http://dystrophy.bandcamp.com devin townsend’s lost skullet

sounds like an emo-Hatebreed trying to play djent while holding on to dreams of the 2004 mall-metalcore scene.

    • KilledByDeath

      Summed it up

    • JADEDKID

yeah man. I didn’t realize it was still cool to try to rip off Killswitch…. Even held to that standard this doesn’t hold up. I feel like i’ve heard this song 100 times before already./

        This this this this

  • stuffandthings

I was digging the structure of the song. Pretty unique approach. I haven’t listened to these guys intently since Ascendancy. Looking forward to more material from the album.

  • Sean

Like all of their previous works, while the song isn’t horrible it certainly doesn’t stand out or grab your attention any. Just more generic metalcore…

  • Simon

Now I’m reminded about how badly these guys wanted to be Metallica, since they are sticking true to their goal by releasing sub par albums after the first four.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vince-Decker/100002225040320 Vince Decker

haha i used to think they always sounded like a techier, modern metallica but i got some deathcore-y/djenty vibes on this one. they dont do it particularly well for me. i used to like them, but they just bore me now. theyve always been a pretty predictable band, except for this style change all the sudden.

  • http://giantofthemountain.bandcamp.com Lordassenfroth

“trapt gone deathcore” is what came to mind when i heard this. its no surprise, i mean its not like they all the sudden started sucking, they’ve been at it a while.

    • Full Metal Life Jacket

      “trapt gone deathcore” – YES!!

I wish these fucking metal bands would stop trying to sing. If your not Opeth or Mastodon (in the studio at least), then you probably sound shitty. I actually thought it might not be too bad at first, then the singing started, and whoops, it fucking sucks.

      • Ray Peterson212

So your saying Mastodon sound good?! Have you ever listened their vocals? They might have the worst vocals in all of metal.

        • http://giantofthemountain.bandcamp.com Lordassenfroth

i heavily disagree with this statement. Vocally, crack the skye was fucking brilliant and blood mountain, leviathan and remission are so distinct, you could spot mastodon a mile a way from just their vocals. very unlike this sterile, boring, early 2000′s sounding “hard rock” bullshit mixed in with breakdowns and one of the most irritating screams ever. mastodon keeps it real yo!

      • Mongorian

opeth have the most boring generic and emotionless vocals in all of music not just metal. deal with it.

        • death to bro metal

          You’re a troll

        • Full Metal Life Jacket

This is coming from a Winds of Plague lover. You were probably making urban inspired arm movements when you said “opeth have the most boring generic and emotionless vocals in all of music not just metal. deal with it.”?

      • Reality Check

How about we just cut the screaming out all together? Shit is getting so old. Metalheads like to shit on rap for being monotone and boring, but how is screaming any different?

Opeth pulls it off well. It’s good in doses, but I’d prefer bands like BTBAM to have much less of the screaming.

        • The Dude

          To bad Opeth Sucks.

  • http://brutalitopia.blogspot.com/ Mick

This track certainly isn’t anything amazing, but it’s also solid at the same time. I’m glad they released this kind of track first so that it gets me excited for the new album, since the rest of it should be much better than this (right?)

  • hATE-eR

I’ve never understood why this band has gotten so much unfavorable criticism. Perhaps it’s “our” expectation of a band that has so many great riffs and such great production that perhaps has to sound like “something else”, or is it Matt Heafy’s vocals and pretentious aesthetic? It could simply be that for me personally. I think this track sounds great, but let’s see what the sales numbers tell in the end…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vince-Decker/100002225040320 Vince Decker

they have always written really symmetrical, verse chorus verse chorus songs that dont do it for me. sure they have good riffs, but they never surprise me or catch me off guard. its always, “ok, now theyre gonna do that part again.” i want, “holy fucking shit fuck what was that shit?!?!?”

i dunno, i just like more sporadic chaotic slammier stuff. less routine on/off with clean/growled vox. btbam does it well. human abstract did it well. obscura just did it really really reallly really well. these guys are good, but just too “text book” metal, if you will. same way i feel about unearth or all that remains. solid musicians, but really boring uninspired composition.

  • cyrollan

I think the reason that Trivium receives so much flack is because Matt Heafy used to be in an extremely good band before Trivium ! Y’all remember Capharnaum, right?

    • http://myspace.com/theswampzombiecult Blake

      No.

    • Mouthful of Precious Stones

YES!!!! Such a good band that no one fucking knew about

    • Brian

Yeah, I remember that! But wasn’t that kind of a one off thing? I don’t think you can really say “he used to be in that band.”

  • Jester

Meh, coming from someone who has their discography except for the first album.

    • TheSkunkCatcher

you’re missing out, their debut is awesome

  • EarthIsGay

    Sounds good to me.

    • The Dude

      This is correct

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Faux-King-Christoph/1567502385 Faux King Christoph

Not a bad song at all. I cant believe no one has noted the similarities to Soilwork on this song. If they are going to go back to sounding like a modernized melo-death band thats fine with me as longs are the riffs are good and the choruses are catchy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Schwartz/1335360433 Ryan Schwartz

i mean i heard soilwork circa STAGD, which was a shitty record, but I must say, I didn’t mind this track at all…not something I’d go out and download, but definitely something I wouldn’t be elitist about, ha!

  • Bale

Trivium were my gateway band, now im into bands that are nothing like them. So coming from a long time Trivium fan, this is a decent effort, nothing amazing. And I swear either Matt or Corey sound like the vocalist from Between The Buried And Me when doing the harsh vocals.

    • Spaceman(Thatswhattheysayiam)

      no.

  • joeydiphard

Relatively new fan since they came thru NYC @ irving plaza (great performance imo), which is surprising since I’m old. I liked the track, it will have its place in the collection though probably not when I’m in the mood to hear the rest of their stuff. I found it a little more rock-y, first thing I thought when I hit play was ‘is this Diecast?’

    • Nick>

This sums up my thoughts exactly.

  • axem

    It’s missing Christian Älvestam

    • MachinaeSupremacist

      That’s not him?

  • Kyle

Yeah, pretty much how I feel about most Trivium. Not bad, but not great. I really dug “Shattering the Skies Above.” That song really sounded like the band growing into their own skin. This doesn’t.

  • Utmu

It’s a good song in my opinion, I liked Shattering the Skies Above as well, my only problem with that song was that it got old fast. But I digress, I’m getting the new album.

  • Johnny

I am a huge Trivium fan, and I think that this song is shit.

They release Shogun, and then THIS?!

    • Reality Check

Agree 100%. I thought Shogun was an indicator of Trivium maturing as a band. This track sounds like they’re back to trying to be something they’re not.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brendan-Earl-Grey-Seigel/1414603204 Brendan Earl Grey Seigel

Oh cool, a new All That Remains track!

    • Izzy_Jones

Hahahaha this made me crack up!

    • EvilMoogle

My thoughts exactly. I think this song sounds like it could have been a track on For We Are Many.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cameron-Davis/1598640014 Cameron Davis

    sounds really unmemorable to me.

  • Andrew

Trivium was a gateway band for me so they have always held a soft spot for me (even though they seemed to have been jumping genres to get more fans). I thought with Shogun (and Shattering the Skies Above) they were actually getting more comfortable with their own sound, but now they seem to be regressing again. Maybe this is just a weak track they released for the mall metal kids but if this reflects the rest of the album, I’m gonna be pretty disappointed.

  • Trev

Started with a generic chug breakdown and then into a pop chorus. LAME

  • Colin

I give up on this band i just dont like em anymore

  • Dan

This isn’t really a song so much as it is a chorus and a breakdown….

      10

  • Rik

Doesn’t sound as good as most of the last album, but I like it.

  • Yeah

According to guitarist Corey, this is the slowest track on the album.

    So maybe… There’s hope?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joseph-Acosta/1548720203 Joseph Acosta

I wasnt sure about it when i first heard but i do like the song. for anyone worried about them changing their sound or doing something bad, i felt better after reading comments from corey on facebook

“there are lots of variety on the album so there is alot of intersting things to pick out”
“in waves is like the slowest song on the album haha everything else is way more up tempo”

  • John

I liked The Crusade and Shogun, and this song blows. Hard.

    • The Dude

      No John, you blow hard.

  • Damotello

Trivium albums are like Star Trek films it seems. Avoid the odd numbered ones.

    • cougar party

      So far, you are correct.

  • Braston

I’m listening through my iPhone, so I can’t really say anything about tone until I’ve heard the actual CD. But it’s not bad, they seem to have gotten rid of the James Hetfield gruff vocals. It’s a little less thrash-y too, but I like Trivium, so ill check this album out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Lekberg/779008102 Jason Lekberg

Trivium – we take whatever’s popular at the moment and make a song out of it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Raphael-Pinsker-Ba-Broadcasting/28400447 Raphael Pinsker Ba Broadcasting

It’s like they took everything that’s been done in metalcore; the breakdowns and cheesy melodies and made it into a song.

    • Jester

Which is why they released The Crusade when they could have stuck with Metalcore/NWAHM in the mid 2000′s. I know alot of people who stopped listening to them after that record for the same reason even though it was a pretty solid record for that reason.

      • Reality Check

Do you think Trivium would be as big as they are if they were still another metalcore band? Hell no.

  • jason

shattering the skies above was great, what happened here?

  • Todd

Its ok, still looking forward to the album though.

  • jamesjones

    zzz, meh/10

    shogun was awesome

  • A normal human like the rest of you

Reminds me of It Dies Today.

  • Brian \m/(-_-)\m/

love it. theyve been experimenting in diff directions with the later releases. unfortunately, their first attempt to vary from the formula, an album i wont even dignify with a mention by name, sucked hairy black man parts. but shogun really worked and theyre trying some new stuff here. i see the KSE influence obviously, but its subtly different with the melodies and chord progressions. and lets face it, KSE have repackaged and re-released the same song something like 32 times since howard jones showed up, at least you give trivium credit for variation. ill wait to see how the album comes out and then ill rly decide.

  • Misha

I kinda liked shogun, and I kinda like this song. As a whole, however, I’m just not into metalcore. I actually like Matt Heafy’s clean singing. I can’t stand his screaming, however. More clean singing and less screaming normally means less interesting music as far as I’m concerned, but with Heafy, it’s the opposite. I liked the song, but I’m still not going to rush out and buy their new album when it hits.

  • Mateja Vidakovic

Really loving the track, I like the fact they did not try replicate Shogun (which was perfect) but are trying out something fresh. Cannot wait for to hear the rest.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nico-Cervantes/1281091549 Nico Cervantes

That song could’ve been good, but it’s way too repetitive. If it ended around the three minute mark, rather than the 5 minute mark, I think it would’ve been a bit more successful, but they added two minutes of filler and killed any momentum they had going for them.

I’ll always like Trivium, but I’ll take anything from their first two cd’s over this.

  • Dick Pepperfield

IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES IIN WAAVVEEEEES

Besides the repetitive song title, I find this pretty interesting. I lost all interest in Trivium after giving The Crusade a few listens. Shogun didn’t appeal to me at all, mainly because of the japanese fuckery. But according to this, they’re going back to the more ascendency style, which I loved.

  • Jared

Trivium has always been an awesome band and caught my ear with their net of awesome riffs and vocals and drums and bass. The issue I have with this song is pretty much just the verse. During the verse. the only lyric is the line IN WAVES!!!! -Thats it. One line of lyrics, repetition of the same riff, then it goes back into the chorus. Seems to me to be simple lazy writing and not putting more lyrics (or atleast a different vocal pattern) during the verse. I enjoy the riffs as they are decent at a minimum, and everything else during the song is good too. It’s just the ferklin verse that brings the entire song down for me.

  • nich

well that sucked. sounds like new BFMV which is also shit.

    • The Dude

      You suck bro.

  • Anthony

    Not diggin’ it.

Eww. Sounds too much like shitcore for me. GHUGGA CHUGGA GHUGGA CHOKE. No thanks, I’ll pass.

  • ACoffinShip

Man, how did Trivium manage to get even MORE generic? At least it’s not as bad as The Crusade but that’s a pretty fucking low bar to set.

  • Scourge441

Trivium are and have always been awful, but this is terrible even by their standards.

    Seriously, fuck this band.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Devon-Czekaj/550092101 Devon Czekaj

The title for this track should be:
“Let’s combine the worst elements of metalcore with re-swede melodeath! -The Song”

When is Chimaira going to release a song?

  • Nickmeister

not a trivium fan, but liking the song… let’s hear the whole album, and maybe i buy! :)

eh, just another formulated, repetitive, generic, metal song by a band that does it best.

Ehh… I liked their previous albums but this song just seems bland. If its anything like the rest of the album, Im not interested. Ember to inferno and Ascendancy are their good albums.

Christian Avelstam should either sue or preferably kick Matt Heafys ass for this.

    It’s not that it’s bad… it’s just that it’s not Sylosis haha

  • The Ibex

I just hope this is their 2011 version of Dying In Your Arms or Anthem We r the Fire. Such a weak song. So weak.. I hope this is not how the rest of the album sounds.

  • chris

Bands still make music that sounds like this? How is this trend not dead?

  • Jimbo

Fantastic song. Everyone who hates this probably does not actually play music. If you can match their stuff, you can say whatever, if not, shut up……

The drums match the guitar(s) PERFECTLY… the bass presence is felt, and the vocals are controlled and powerful… Take the least favorable black album song… mine is, Don’t Tead on Me… i hear that song on the radio, i say.. “meah… its not the best song they’ve done, but the song is recorded tight and is a solid track.”

This might not tear your face off, but it does show how complete of a sound they’ve acheived and when anyone thats hating can proove it and release better music, let me know, i’ll gladly follow your band too.

Stop the hate… just spread good music.

    • uLy

      lol on your first line.

The thing I like about Trivium is that every album sounds distinctly different. They aren’t afraid of trying something new. I’m not sure what to think of this song, other than it does have promise. What it reminds me of for some reason is bands like Nippleback and Stone Sour — at least when it comes to that over-harmonized melodic vocal part.

  • simon

they have always been an unmemorable trend following band and always will be, again this is pop music

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Hurley/1289730334 Matt Hurley

  • Austin

For a while I tried to get into Trivium and everytime it just never worked.
And for some reason when I listened to this something just clicked and now I really enjoy them.
Can’t wait for more new stuff.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juan-Jimenez/1313838369 Juan Jimenez

I thought for sure this would have been a more thrash metal-type album than Shogun was, but they did a total 180 and went with a groove metal-like sound for this song… Looks like it pissed off more than a couple of people because it wasn’t what they expected.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kurt-Horimoto/702126482 Kurt Horimoto

    ugh i hate it :(
it just sounds like a more aggresive american style of The Ocean or something. i mean it’s a good song. but i liked old trivium much more.

  • Kanon666

Matt cut off his hair and his balls :(

It is a horrible song, I’ve always tried to defend trivium but this is plain bullshit

  • The I

I’m reading a lot of complaints about the main riff here, which I think is actually pretty cool. It’s got kind of a cool, catchy sound without sacrificing heaviness. Too bad it apes Killswitch Engage so hard.

The solo, though… Boring, boring, boring.

Overall, this song doesn’t make me want to shoot myself in the balls, either in a good way or a bad one. It’s nice to hear that Trivium still isn’t afraid of evolution, but it sounds like they’re evolving away from the thrash sound they did so well, which may be a mistake. It lacks intensity.

  • Arby

They could headline Warped Tour with this..
br00tal kids would go hard, definitely.

  • Phil Anshlomo

If I’m honest, nothing from Trivuim has made me feel much after Ascendancy. I don’t dislike their work after that, it just doesn’t make me feel anything. This track is the same way. I don’t dislike it, I just don’t really care one way or another about.

  • BobbyGeldof724

This song is epic win. All you haters can go fuck yourselves.

Youre an asshole, I saw in flames live and cried cause it was so amazing, im a british 15 year old in a melodic metalcore band (trivium>inflames>whitechapel>TDWP) and we have a pretty sick preformance. Quit dissing europeans cause most every other nation SUCKS at being original,

  • Cameron

I don’t see why people expect something, all of Trivium’s albums sound different. This song gets you pumped and it’s just so fucking organized. Fuck yeah \m/

  • SteSmith1

I really love it, havent stopped listening to it since it got released, dont really care what the haters say its their opinion but in my opinion its EPIC!!!

I might be the only one, but I got an old school Fear Factory vibe from the song.

These comments make me wonder why sites like this even have Comments Sections to begin with. You all overrate your opinions highly if you think even for a moment that they’re worth posting. Seriously, scroll up and look at this crap. It’s not a great song, but it’s not terrible. If you hate Trivium, don’t buy the album; if you like them, buy it. The end.

      This.

    Oh man

Chorus sounds SO MUCH like a Soilwork chorus it’s not even funny. Really dislike the breakdown-y verse riff, and as people have mentioned the guitar tone sucks. I’ll probably still check out the album when it drops though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Dunn/71904461 Matthew Dunn

That was unnecessarily long, the guitars fell flat, clean vocals sucked and had more breakdowns than I could count. Fail.

This song is this album’s “Dying in Your Arms” from Ascendancy. It’s a watered-down version of their sound, made more accessible for crossover appeal. I’m sure the album will have much more interesting songs. This solo is, rather conspicuously, the least technical in Trivium’s discography. While I don’t necessarily equate technicality with quality, the band’s shredding solos have always been a pretty big part of their appeal for me. I am pretty confident that once I’ve heard it I will conclude that this is the weakest track on the album. Overall, pretty catchy tune but this is Diet Trivium with a two rudimentary solos, made for the casual listener rather than fans in an effort to sell some records. As long as the rest of the album doesn’t sound like a collection of similarly watered-down singles, I can’t say I blame them, it’s feast or famine y’all.

sorry not trying to diss u but it wouldnt let me leave a comment, but this is what is wrong with all of you fuck heads, yall want fucking satanic souding shit, that fucking youngens would listen to, im 24 and im a full trivium, megadeth, metallica fan all the way, i have liked every album that all of them have done, metallicas st anger pushed it alot, and i mean alot but after ignoring the snare durm i did like a few songs on the album, but anyways, you people are afraid of change how many of you are muscians, i am and i write guitar lines that make me feel good that make me feel like fucking flying off the deep end.  but thats me.  i have the whole new album in waves and its badass it could be there black album, this band is a true metal band, there are no sell outs other than the bands like nickel back and theory of a dead man that fall into a trend, but like dave said in “back in the day” from the system has failed album, they put rock n roll on its ass and metal is still king today.  but get over all this stupid i like old trivium better yea i like old metallica better but thats in the past and there are still badass and successful, and so will trivium. metal is the only thing in music that is real anymore, so dont put down these bands for doing something new cause not only are they doing what we would love to do but they are trying to help put metal where it belongs and thats number one on the charts, fuck these wanna be rockstarsfucking be real not some glamour bitch.

This new album is formidable! As always, the songs are very structured and the songs have a new element that makes ‘em different from the other albums. That’s very important because some bands have a discography of 10 albums but all of them sound the same. In Waves reveal the profound imagination and talent of the band. Finally, I think most of the lyrics of this album are very profound and inspiring. I love In Waves.
