EXCLUSIVE TRACK PREMIERE: UNEARTH’S “RUINATION OF THE LOST”

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 at 1:00pm by

Unearth have never let their fans down before, and their new album, Darkness in the Light, is no exception. All the elements of a great Unearth record are here — hardcore-tinged metal with lotsa harmonized guitar wizardry, breakneck breakdowns, cannon-sized drums (courtesy of Killswitch Engage/Blood Has Been Shed’s Justin Foley!), and hooks that manage to get stuck in your head without being reliant on weak-ass good cop/bad cop vocals. Like all of these Massholes’ best work, this album absolutely demands that you get caught in a fuckin’ mosh, and if you refuse, it will grab you by the throat and toss you into the pit to be devoured by those braver than yourself.

MetalSucks is proud to be debuting a new track from the album, “Ruination of the Lost,” which you can stream below. We hand picked this track from the album because we think it rocks so goddamn motherfucking hard, and we have no doubt that you’ll agree!

Darkness in the Light comes out July 5 on Metal Blade. You can pre-order it here in a variety of attractive packages… we’re particularly partial to the one that comes with a beer bong.

And don’t forget that Unearth will spend the summer kicking ass on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival along with Megadeth, Machine Head, In Flames, Trivium, Suicide Silence, All Shall Perish, Kingdom of Sorrow, Red Fang, and more. If you’ve never seen Unearth live before, holy shit do you need to go do that, and if you have, well, you know you’re in for a treat. Get dates here.

  • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

Wheres the mention of the Badass re-issuing of Death’s “Human”.

    • treghet

They would rather write articles about iwrestledabearonce.

      • Hammer_Smashed_Hurtt

        Shame…

          are you dumb bro?

  • Brian

With the two tracks released so far, it sounds like they are going back to more of an “Oncoming Storm” sound, which is fucking awesome. “The March” was ok, but I prefer this stuff much more.

    • Anthony

Didn’t people say that about the March though? That they were going for an Oncoming Storm sound?

I love that record, but III: In The Eyes of Fire was fantastic, I don’t know why they didn’t continue the evolution with that.

      • Greg

Dude, I agree!! III: In the Eyes of Fire blew my mind, and still does to this day whenever I take a listen. It was just so thrashy and technical for them, it’s like Unearth took every aspect of their sound and injected it with Red Bull or something. The breakdowns and melodic parts were still there, but everything was so much darker and brooding. From what I’ve heard of the new album, it seems like they’re leaning more toward that sound, but not totally. The new one’s gonna kick ass, but I do wish they had stuck with the direction they headed for in 2006.

      • John

No. Buz McGrath said specifically in an interview that he was listening to a lot of mid paced groove metal at the time, and felt like he never had a chance to write an album like that. He said quit obviously that The March was a one time thing.

  • Braston

I saw them live last year, these guys know how to have a good time. Look forward to hearing this!

  • TomHanksFan

Really like this song. It sounds like Unearth… as it should.

  • BGordon

I love this Band but this song sounds like a Killswitch Engage Track. I know Justin Foley played drums on this Album but man the drums are just a standard drum track with no Flare!

III EYes of Fire with Terry Date just sounds HUGE and is my favorite by them!

    • jamesjones

Yeah, the guitars/vocals/everything else are signature Unearth, but it really sounds like they grabbed a drum track from a random KSE song and mixed it in.

      • Matt

Maybe since he was just a studio drummer they wanted basic drum tracks that they could add flare to live…..I mean their last drummer sucked so maybe they figure instead of putting down ridiculous drum tracks keep it simple and tear it up live instead. Then again I could be totally pulling this theory out of my ass.

    • c-bot

Well, your facts are wrong so your opinions are unfounded. For example, Foley *recorded* the drums –

“We wrote the record on a drum machine, and Ken would write these kinda ridiculous drum parts and Justin just came into the studio and nailed everything we threw at him, he’s an amazing dude.” – the friggin Uneath FB page info

      http://www.facebook.com/unearthofficial?sk=app_4949752878#!/unearthofficial?sk=info

Furthermore, “standard drum track”? Flare? Its not exactly the backbeat to a beatles ditty, and whatever the hell flare is supposed to be, its not exactly the type of music with cow bells and wood blocks thrown in for fun, chief.

  • ParickSTL

He’s still doing the vocal style he started on The March but yeah the music is better. This actually wouldnt have fit on any of their previous albums. Good song.

  • frigga21

This album will be brutal. In the eyes of fire AND the march were not their best stuff. It all felt too processed and like they were trying too hard.

I love this song. Fuck flare, fuck technicality. Just go out, plug your shit in, and fucking rock!

  • The I

This might be the first time that Unearth’s most recent record is better than Killswitch’s.

    • Ryan

Huh? Have you heard the last few KsE albums? They’ve been getting worse since The End of Heartache. Unearth has been putting out better shit than them ever since Alive or Just Breathing.

I like this one better than the other new single, but I was hoping Foley would sound more like Mike Justain. I REALLY miss that guy’s drumming.

They’re still my favorite band ever. Unearth rules!

      • Birr

I have to agree with ryan, the last few KSE albums have been weak and cater to all the girlie-men! lol Unearth has always been consistent wth their style. I also really miss Mike Justain, that guy’s super aggressive drumming style is unmatched! The only thing I can say that could be considered positive about him leaving the band is that it forced the rest of the band to step their game up. Although the lyrics and drums in “Grave of opportunity” are kinda weak, the guitars mind blowing!

I definitely dig this song, but Oncoming Storm = one of the greatest metal albums of all time, and I highly doubt that even Unearth will ever match it.

        • Kocheez

I must agree with Birr and Ryan. I’ve been preaching those two points for a very long time. Yes, unearth have released an album or two that weren’t quite up to par….but never really disappointed me the way KSE has. I’d even go as far as to say that Lamb of God hasn’t been the same since Ashes of the Wake.

          • nobody

            mike justain was awesome.

  • Cayle

Both songs I’ve heard off the new album sound awesome. Pumped for the new record. Unearth has been doing it right for a long time now. I’m glad to see they’ve outlived some of their trendier colleagues. This band deserves the metal world’s support!!!

i like it and i didn’t think the drums sounded like tacked-on KsE tracks, though there could have been better fills. but i don’t know why they haven’t had any really epic solos since III. all the solos on the march, and this one, just sound like an excuse to give trevor a break. they are still really good, but nothing like III…

  • Christian

This song is good, really really good. I am expecting a heavy brutal album come July 5th. Every single album that these guys drop is just amazing. Just like a few people on here have said, they have kept their style and have not changed. They keep it metal like always. I hope that they have more solos on this album then The March. If Unearth is reading this then i would like to thank you guys for keeping it metal just like you said you would. Thanks guy. Boston Fucken Metal!

  • http://www.angrymetalguy.com Angry Metal Guy

This is OK, but these guys really lost it after their debut, IMO. None of the stuff that they’ve released on Metal Blade has even felt remotely similar in originality or intensity. It’s strange.

  • DirtyWarriorMan

Man… I used to be SO into these guys back in the Stings of Conscience days. Oncoming Storm, too. It’s not that their newer records are bad–they’re not, they’re fine. But I can only listen to the same thing so many times. I don’t need 100 Unearth songs. I think all the talk about their evolution or progression on certain records is ridiculous. They all sound the same.

    • pee

Stings of Conscience is a perfect 10

  • Th3G0dofWar

this new song and the previously released song sounds like they made the march, and oncoming storm have a baby and then gave it the pick of destiny. and i think that there is no way this album is going to suck. the way it sounds right now it will be better than march and EOF but not better than Oncoming storm which is def their best album and one of the greatest metal albums of the last decade. period

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laz-Mmxii/1038883574 Laz Mmxii

Personally, my fav album they did was Stings of Conscience, but that was my first impression of em quite awhile before Oncoming Storm came out, which also blew my mind clear out of the atmosphere… I had no idea so many people liked Eyes of Fire, I personally thought the vocals were a bit tinny and high ended and found it hard to listen to… I prefer their sound with Adam D at the helm which is why I liked The March alot, even though I thought it had its weak points as well… I am looking forward to this album, Im sure Im not the only one having trouble listening to this genre these days due to repetition and redundancy (especially in the breakdowns) so Im hoping for some fresh ideas from them as well as the same old face breaking breakdowns and riffy melodies that I have come to love over the last 10 years of listening to this band… Cheers, spread love n music!!!

  • MrMooGuy

Unearth has never disappointed, and im lovin how they change their style up a little with every album, while keeping that signature melody we know them for. Reviews are kidding though, Unearth puts in 150% in every album and it shows through, if The March was more melodic and theme based, then this is def straight up In Your Face and Fuck Shit Up, done deal, im preordering Darkness in the Light.

Has anyone noticed this is the 1st Unearth album that dosen’t start off with the word “The”
    “The strings of conscience”
    “the oncoming storm”
    “The eyes of fire”
    “The march”

    • gmr

It’s (IN THE EYES OF FIRE III) Theres an IN in front of THE

  • hatahs

    Damn what happened to metalcore?
I’m hearing bad things bout the new Trivium release…
    Hearing bad things bout this….
In Flames got a new one coming out but they started sucking years ago….
KSE might not even be a band anymore

Looks like As I Lay Dying and All That Remains are saving the genre right now..

  • Ziltoid Sucks

Haha… i just went to order this package. They should mention that its around $43 w/ shipping and handling. No thanks.

  • Ti – 6

I’d say their best album will always be III:In the eyes of fire. It sounded different from the rest…Oncoming storm was alright and..I suppose I’m the only one that’ll say this, but the march seemed a tad uninspired. In the eyes of fire was one of my favorites lyrically as far as unearth were concerned as well as in sound. I wonder if this will beat it.
