We had a lot of fun doing our list of The Top 25 Modern Metal Guitarists, but now the fun is over… until we do our next big list which is sure to make a large percentage of you unnecessarily angry. Oh, how we cannot wait for that time!

        Speaking of ass, do any of you guys remember that Dave Matthews Band video from a few years ago with Julia Roberts in it? I think it was called Dreamgirl?     You guys are geniuses and I give you credit. These lists don’t matter at all. You could post a list about “Best shit ever taken by metal ___” and people will comment/argue/send death threats/etc. Yet in doing so it generates double to quadrupole the normal amount of comments and hits you get compared to a normal article. I imagine your guys traffic for the month of May is ridiculous compared to normal and is only making this website more appealing to advertisers.

    If you would’ve stuck to strictly recent guitarists in talking about “Modern Metal” I would have understood. But Jerry Cantrell and Skolnick made it, without Kerry King?! Have you heard the Album World Painted Blood, which has been released in the past 5 years I might add. I’m not gonna say King should round off the list but he belongs there more then a lot of them do. With the way this list went I’m surprised Kirm Hammet didnt top it off, with sellout Slash in 2nd place. The redeemers for me were Thordendal and Abasi in the top 4, but after that I think the readers poll clearly illustrated people who shouldve been on there, especially since the top to voted guitarists werent even on the list! This list was a great idea, but I’m curious as to why the readers poll top 25 wasnt listed, maybe because a fair amount of the people on that list werent on the Metal Sucks list?

      Im guessing that people who voted were more compelled to vote for guitarists that got snubbed from the list altogether than nitpicking the order of ones already on the list. That being said, theres no way Paul Waggoner is number 1 modern metal guitarist.

          AJ runs circles around Tosin. Hell Misha Mansor does too, he wrote pretty much all of the AAL debut and just had Tosin play it. He has the sweet solo in On Impulse and CAFO. Tosin isnt as good as everyone is making him out to be.

          i’m sorry but AJ Minette should not have been number fucking 1. he quit after Nocturne because he said he just couldn’t play metal anymore… he went off to school learned a bit, and now every one of their songs sound like something bach wrote when he was 12. he uses a few neopolitan chords and some diminished shit and all of sudden everyone wants to suck his dick. there’s no chromaticism, no passing tones or variation in key or scale or even general feel for that matter. i understand that something doesn’t have to be weird to be good, but as a music major, metal guitarist, and long time fan of THA, i’m simply not impressed. IMHO, this list was made by people who don’t know shit about guitar…

    I hate this list. I think Paul Ryan should atleast be around the 15th- 1st area. Misha Mansoor should be 25th. And a few of these guys should be removed, Cattle Decaps guitarist is good enough to be on this, Obscura’s, and Kelly Shaefer of Atheist. Other than that, David Davidson deserves number one.

    Now: I’m not in charge of a blog and if I wanted to make my own list, I should just do it. And, it’s just a fucking opinion of a few people so whatever, who cares, not a big deal. Also, these people are probably more successful then me, so touche.

    The first few are ok (thanks for remembering Fred) but Synyster Gates? Really? Being able to riff is one thing, but being innovative is another. Did you even evaluate any women? It is important to explain what went into building the list. Was this just “guitarists we think are awesome within our personal music repertoire” or was there some real theory behind it? It is going to get a lot of comments and hits, so kudos for that angle at least.

    I like a lot of the guitarists on the list, but the ordering is all kinds of fucked up. Jeff Loomis is a true virtuoso and easily one of the most proficient guitarists on the list. He should be within the top 3.

    Jerry Cantrell, Buckethead, Adam Jones, Vernon Reid, Scott Hull, Karl Sanders, Brent Hinds, and Synyster Gates should not be on this list at all.

    Look at all of these other guitarists who could have been on here in place of these guys: Paul Masvidal, Per Nilson, Ron Jarzombek, Paul Waggoner, Luke Hoskin, Chris Broderick, Muhammed Suicmez, Christian Muenzner, Michael Romeo, Andy James, Joe Haley, Chris Storey, Rusty Cooley, Devin Townsend, Mattias Eklundh, Dan Weller, Graham Pinney, James Malone, Matt Sotelo, Josh Middleton, Alan Sacha Laskow, Daniel Mongrain, Paul Ortiz, etc.

      fuck you. hinds, sanders, hull, jones, buckethead and even cantrell all deserve to be on the list. the picks were fucking awesome in my humble opinion. living colour was the only band that i don’t listen to so i can’t say anything about vernon reid

        The names I mentioned who shouldn’t be on the list are either sloppy or don’t really have anything to do with modern metal.

        Buckethead is great, but his music is not modern metal. Jerry Cantrell and Adam Jones are rock guitarists, not modern metal. Vernon Reid does not play modern metal. Half the stuff Brent Hinds plays could fall under classic rock or prog rock, and he is nowhere near as proficient as many of the people who were left off of this list. Scott Hull is overrated and more associated with punk/hardcore/spastic noise than modern metal. Karl Sanders and Synyster Gates are known for being sloppy players… They don’t belong on a top 25 list.

        There were clearly a ton of better options.

    You have the douche from Avenged 7fold on the list, but no Per from Scar SYm, no Andre from Blind Gaurdian, no Erik Rutan, and you have this guy from a band that is relatively mediocre as #1. Seems like the guy who knows the least about metal won the arguments you seemed to have had… Way to phone this in.

    Kirk’s post black stuff was kinda weak, but he did some sweet stuff on Death Magnetic. I mean, honestly, I don’t see what separates Jerry Cantrell and Kirk Hammett. They’re both bluesy soulful players, they both use the wah pedal and the floyd rose quite a bit, and they both prefer not to just rip somoene’s face off with a guitar solo and rather use it to add something to the song. Sure Cantrell is the force behind AIC, but Kirk has to deal with the greatest rhythm player of all time in his band. I also wouldn’t call AIC Metal, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t a good band, just not a metal band.

    I think there’s good ideas behind this list, just that modern metal needs to be properly defined. Is Testament really modern metal? Is AIC even metal? Is Avenged Sevenfold modern metal? (and if so Syn doesn’t deserve this spot) Is Nile modern metal? Is Living Colour modern metal? Realistically there’s way too many guys that didn’t make this list that should have. If Skolnick is on this list then Hetfield and Peterson definitely need to be on this list. Samething with MegaDave and Kerry King. Jeff Waters, Alex Webster, and Trey Azogoth should also get strong consideration.

    Are you guys too cool and hip to include Jonathan Donais or Matt Bachland from Shadows Fall? Or how about the dudes from Lamb Of God? For arguments sake I’d say
    Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch could be worth a mention, probably because even though you might not like his main band the guy is one of the people responsible for pioneering a specific sound especially since hes also a producer whos worked with numerous other bands within a genre.  Buz McGrath or Ken Susi from Unearth are also worth a mention.

    These artists I’ve listed might not be cool enough for your hipster metal website because they’re in established, successful bands now, but their guitar playing should be undisputably world class, especially the two lads from Shadows Fall.

    guys, you do notice that Kirk Hammet is the FAKE number 1, that means everyone thinks he’s awesome, but he’s not really. quite nice to see Bulb in there but personally i think Karl Sanders should be a bit lower, still on the list he is a a great writer and rhythm player but i don’t think his lead guitar work is deserving of being above Jeff Loomis or John Petrucci, who are just as tight at riffage. oh and Synyster Gates, seriously?

    I bet the one’s who where doing the list for this feel silly because a few weeks after this post Devin Townsend released two of the best albums of the year that show how big and far between genres that a person can go.  Not only that but shows nothing but pure genius on both albums.  Just a thought for the moment.  MetalSucks Rocks!!! Thanks for the hard work.  Even tho you play all the time.
