Anciients - Heart of Oak Small

I have yet to experience Anciients in a live setting, but I’m excited to — ’cause their new album, Heart of Oak, is really cool. And it looks like I’ll get my chance to see ’em in concert soon! ‘Cause they’ve just scored an incredibly sweet, and no doubt highly-coveted, gig: they’ll be the openers for this year’s edition of the Death to All tour, which will see the surviving members of the Human-era Death lineup (that would be guitarist Paul Masvidal, bassist Steve DiGiorgio, and drummer Sean Reinert) teaming up with vocalist Max Phelps (also a touring guitarist for Cynic) to break out some out Chuck Schuldiner classics. And I think Death fans will really dig Anciients — their music is neither as harsh nor heavy Death’s, but it is as intricate in its musicianship. Assuming no one is pissy about the lack of goblin vocals, this should really a match made in Heaven.

You can get dates for the Death to All tour here. If you’re still not hip to Anciients, they’ve just unveiled a new song called “Faith and Oath” via Guitar World, and I highly recommend you check it out. Seriously, trust me on this one — this band rocks.

Season of Mist will release Heart of Oak on April 16.
