Those initially lured into the world of Chelsea Wolfe but her more metallic tendencies may be disappointed to learn that she’s touting her new album, Birth of Violence, as a “return to her roots” of sorts, with a press release announcing the album saying that “The songs stem from humble beginnings-little more than Wolfe’s voice and her Taylor acoustic guitar.” In other words, despite what its title may suggest, Birth of Violence isn’t gonna be much like the grungy, moody rock of 2017’s Hiss Spun and 2015’s Abyss.

But those fans shouldn’t be disappointed! Because if “The Mother Road,” the first single from Birth of Violence, is any indication, the album is still going to retain the elements that make Wolfe’s heavier material so great: simple, gorgeous melodies, poetic lyrics, and a generally gloomy AF atmosphere. Everyone should get on board with this.

Birth of Violence will be out September 13 on Sargent House. Pre-order it here. Wolfe will embark on an acoustic tour starting in October; dates are below.
