EVER WANTED TO SEE FIVE NAKED DUDES IN A SAUNA COVER MOTÖRHEAD’S “ACE OF SPADES?”

Monday, November 14th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

I mean, who hasn’t, right?

Well, today is our lucky day, friends! ‘Cause that’s just what this group, Porkka Playboys, did, thus generations of untapped artistic desires. And don’t be too scared by the fact that they’re naked; you don’t actually have to see their peens or anything like that.

But wait! It gets stranger! ‘Cause they also covered Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”… entirely while sitting in a small car.

Welcome to “Question of the Week,” a (sometimes) weekly debate amongst the MetalSucks staff regarding a recent hot button issue.

For no particular reason whatsoever other than we thought it would be fun, this week we asked our writers:

IF YOU COULD HAVE BEEN PRESENT FOR THE CREATION OF ANY SINGLE METAL ALBUM, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

The MS staff’s answers after the jump.

SACHA BARON COHEN PLAYING FREDDY MERCURY? SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!

Friday, September 17th, 2010 at 11:30am by

Deadline Hollywood has broken the story that Sacha Baron Cohen — a.k.a. “Ali G,” “Borat,” “Bruno,” etc. — is going to play Freddie Mercury in a movie about Queen. Peter Morgan, who was nominated for an Oscar for writing another Queen movie, and is also responsible for the scripts for Frost/Nixon and The Last King of Scotland (among others), is penning the screenplay.

So while no director is yet attached, this all strikes me as good news. I don’t think Peter Morgan is the cat’s pajamas the way some people do, but he’s certainly a talented writer. And I can’t think of better casting for Freddy Mercury than Cohen — sure, the roles he’s played up ’til now have been primarily comedic, but you can’t say that the fella doesn’t give an immersive performance. I think he could really hit the ball out of the park playing the legendary Queen vocalist.

Slightly more troubling, if understandable, is the fact that the surviving members of Queen are involved as producers on the project. This kind of thing bothers me because while I’m sure it’s great to have a first-hand eyewitness to the events in question working on your film, and it most certainly makes securing the music rights a breeze, it can lead to sugar coating some of the facts. ‘Cause let’s be real, no one really wants to come off on film as a total dick.

But I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I really think this movie could end up being good, which would be a nice change of pace for rock biopics.

FAT CHICK COVER ALBUM NOW HAS AN ALBUM COVER WITH A FAT CHICK

Friday, July 9th, 2010 at 11:00am by

And thar she is in all her full-bodied glory!

whole lotta love: an all-star tribute to fat chicks

The cover was done by Les Toil, whose trademark “big girl” style kinda reminds me of Coop. Comments Toil on the cover, “Passive and subtle were never qualities that attracted me to rock & roll. Apparently the same can be said for my appreciation of the opposite sex. I want a fat bottomed girl. A whole lotta Rosie. A big-legged woman who does (or doesn’t) have soul. In other words, I want a whole lotta love!”

As previously reportedWhole Lotta Love: An All-Star Tribute to Fat Chicks is an homage to the fine bigger-bottomed ladies of rock n’ roll, and will feature covers of like-minded tunes such as Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls,” AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie,” Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom,” Poison’s “Unskinny Bop” and more, played by an all-star cast of musicians.

Can we get an “amen” for the lovers of full-bodied chicks in the e-room? Amen! As many commenters pointed out the last time I ran a story about this compilation, there’s definitely a difference between “fat” and “full-bodied.” It’s unfortunate that this comp’s creators have chosen to use the former when they really mean the latter, but I guess the word “fat” catches your attention. Whole Lotta Love will come out August 31st, and is sure to spark the ire of skinny girl-lovers worldwide!

A PANTERA REMIX = SACRILEGE? NAH.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 at 1:30pm by

hello atomicMS Maniac Adrien Arnoux sent us an “outraged” email about the French remix outfit Hello, Atomic (actually just one dude) whose latest jawn “We Will Brokeback Mountain Yo’ Ass” is a mash-up of the main riff from Pantera’s “Cowboys From Hell” with vocal samples from Queen’s “We Will Rock” over the choruses and The Beastie Boys’ “Intergalactic” over the verses. It’d be awfully easy to be dismissive and hateful towards a remixer for butchering/stealing/raping/pillaging a sacred Pantera riff… but no, this shit is awesome. I support. And it turns out that Mr. Arnoux is the man behind the plan himself; nice work, dude!

For one, it’s well done; this isn’t some hack sloppily cutting and pasting together beats in GarageBand. On account of that, if this remix inspires just one kid to say, “That riff is pretty cool. What is it? Pantera? I’ll have to check them out,” and then that kid subsequently falls in love with Pantera… it’s all worth any supposed desecration this remix could’ve caused. I also happen to like the other two songs he mashed up with the Pantera riff; I’ve got mad love for Queen and mad love for NYC’s original Jew Yorker rappers The Beastie Boys.

Hello, Atomic also have a Refused vs. Gwen Stefani track on their MySpace page. +1. FTW. A+. etc.
