INTRO BUST
Everybody knows that Hatebreed is by far the most popular hardcore band in the history of the planet, but not everybody knows that they are beyond a doubt the best hardcore band of all time. I can feel the butthurt starting already, but lettuce be srs, brahs: no other hardcore band has consistently dropped album after album of brutal mosh jams. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a step through history and prove it! In more-or-less chronological order, I will go through the bands who some might say hold the title of “best hardcore band of all times” and illustrate why Hatebreed is #1.

Well, the line-up for this year’s New England Metal & Hardcore Festival — one of the oldest and most revered extreme music fests in the U.S. — has been announced, and it’s… interesting. The fest returns to a three-day format after being only two days last year, but if I’m not mistaken, this is the first time that the initial day will be a Thursday, not a Friday. And as reader Brian Kessler pointed out to us via e-mail, there are two noteworthy aspects to the lineup:
It seems like metal and hardcore have been further segregated on the bill — Thursday appears to be almost entirely dedicated to deathcore and crabcore bands, Friday seems to be entirely devoted to hardcore bands, and Saturday is dominated by metal bands. There are pros and cons to this approach — the pro being that if you’re only a fan of one particular style of extreme music, you can cherry pick which day you’re going to attend, and the con being that new fans are less likely to be exposed to bands with whom they were not already familiar.
There seem to be fewer “big name” acts. Sure, Hatebreed and Biohazard are on there, but that’s still a far cry from years’ past. In fact, plenty of big name who have new albums scheduled to come out this year — like Amon Amarth, DevilDriver, Arch Enemy, In Flames, and Children of Bodom — aren’t playing the fest.
Please note that I’m not knocking the fest — in fact, I think Saturday, April 16 is full of killer bands — and I don’t think every fest needs to be headlined by a band of Megadeth’s stature. I just think this particular line-up is… interesting.

Though the year has only just begun, it’s never too early to start speculating about and dissecting this year’s hardcore festivals. The organizers behind the Black N Blue Bowl have already announced a date–May 28th–and are boasting of a lineup worthy of pants-shitting. Given last year’s Supertouch and Yuppicide reunions as well as co-headliners Cro-Mags and Madball, that’s a mighty boast. (Agnostic Front has a new album coming out this year–just saying!)
United Blood, the two-day Richmond Virginia fest, has not only revealed its 2011 dates and location, but a chunk of the roster of artists scheduled to play. And while the initial band list is certainly representative of hardcore today, as it lacks the punch of a cult reunion or surprise headliner. By contrast, last summer’s This Is Hardcore fest included sets from the rebooted Kid Dynamite, Ink and Dagger, and Sheer Terror–and it sold out in less than two days. Furthermore, an overwhelming majority of these bands lready performed at last year’s United Blood, begging the question as to why others aren’t being subbed in. I’d love to see bands with profiles like First Blood and Most Precious Blood on the bill, or artists like Hivemind or Incendiary that could surely benefit from the exposure given by a prominent fest like this.

The sooner you just start thinking of these “Cinemetal Round-Up” columns as Headbanger’s Ball that you can watch anytime without commercials, and as hosted by someone who tells you when he thinks the videos actually gobble blowfish cocks, the better.
And so…
First up today we have a video for the title track from Terror’s latest album, Keepers of the Faith. It’s a pretty average video, but I like Terror and the song is catchy, so I’m willing to cut it some slack. Just this one time, though. After this I expect nothing but Avatardian levels of cinematic innovation… do you hear me, Scott Vogel?

Most readers already know that Century Media recording artists TERROR are the best hardcore band since Black Flag (with Hatebreed a close runner-up). What you may not know is that they are also gifted b-boys, whose hip-hop side project NASTY POSSE has been quietly gathering steam. Consisting of TERROR’s Martin Stewart (guitar) and Nick Jett (drums), NASTY POSSE is more than just another novelty project, they’re actually making some serious waves in the hip-hop scene. Their debut EP on Nastymix records actually entered the Billboard R&B singles chart at #36 — not too bad for what started as something to keep them busy during downtime on tour!
In addition to the world premiere of their debut video “GET BUCK” [embedded above], we are proud to present an EXCLUSIVE MIXTAPE from NASTY POSSE, available only here on MetalSucks, FREE for your listening pleasure!
Hit up Nasty Posse on Myspace and Twitter, and stay tuned for more WORLD EXCLUSIVES from these up-and-coming MCs — and make sure to pick up a copy of TERROR’s newest full-length KEEPERS OF THE FAITH on Hawthorne, California’s own CENTURY MEDIA.

If bands like Carnage, Entombed, Gehenna, and Integrity give you a nerd-boner, Orange County’s own NAILS will make you blow your load faster than Michael Jackson at a Build-A-Bear store. I think many MetalSucks readers will agree that their raw, filthy, vintage thrash/death metal sound is a refreshing departure from the zillions of faceless tech-death and metalcore bands who are way too perfect for their own good, so don’t miss out on their latest record, “Unsilent Death.”
This interview is with guitarist/singer Todd Jones, who you may also know from some of the last decade’s best hardcore bands like Carry On, Terror, and Betrayed. I don’t know him, but I am a big fan of his work, and he seems like someone I would get along with — my friend is in a band with Todd and described him as “genuinely disturbed,” which is about the strongest endorsement you can get in my book!

Those conspiracy theorists over at Hardtimes.ca have provided the hardcore scene with some of the most interesting and even bemusing interviews, not the least of these being with Frankie Palmeri of Emmure. Now, however, the site has debuted some brand new music from First Blood. Taken from their sophomore LP Silence Is Betrayal, “Confront” is hard-hitting both musically as well as lyrically. Frontman Carl Schwartz (ex-Terror) delivers a call to arms, railing against “crimes against humanity” over chugging guitars and militant drums.
Silence Is Betrayal drops November 9th on Bullet Tooth Records. The album is fucking slamming and you oughta pre-order it. First Blood is also headed out on the road with The Ghost Inside and Evergreen Terrace to support the record, so make sure to catch one of these dates.

I’ve seen Terror live a few times, and they definitely know how to put on a fun show. I guess I wasn’t paying close enough attention to front man Scott Vogel’s stage banter, though, ’cause I don’t recall hearing him say anything especially noteworthy — yet someone has started a website, called Vogelisms, that is nothing but ridiculous quotes from the hardcore superstar. Who the hell is following Terror so closely that they have an abundance of Vogel quotes? I have no idea, but the site is funny as hell. Here are some gems gleaned from just the few minutes I’ve been looking at it:
First things first: I disqualified almost anyone who selected Henry Rollins because, essentially, most of you who picked him don’t seem to know the name of any other guy in hardcore with muscles and an attitude. It’s not that I don’t agree that he’s tough-as-fuck and an icon, but I was looking for “thoughtful/interesting/funny/brilliant” answers. Those who picked someone that was on a hardcore album released in the past, oh, fifteen years were given serious consideration, as I was looking for some good candidates in contemporary hardcore. And really, nobody picked any member of Terror? It’s a Terror giveaway… you coulda scored some brownie points for sucking up. Sheesh!
So anyway, though there were several great entries, in the end only one person could win the prize. And that winner is… Andrew Sterner, for his long-winded but well-put defense of Rollins:

Nah, that doesn’t even make any sense! I just couldn’t think of a better headline to convey that The Acacia Strain have announced a tour with Terror, The Red Chord, and The Contortionist, to take place in October and November.
Actually, I’m not even sure I had to tell you that — we’ve gotten so many e-mails about it these past few days, it seems pretty clear that most of you know. In fact, the general message of those e-mails seemed to be something along the lines of, “Why the fuck haven’t you posted anything about this yet, you filthy fucking fucks?”, and the answer is, “We were hoping they’d announce dates so we could post the news and itinerary in one fell swoop.”
But there are still no dates and this tour is worth writing about twice. The Acacia Strain’s new album, Wormwood, is just terrific; Terror, like Hatebreed, are a band best experienced in a live setting; if you read MS regularly, you already know we’re retardedly huge fans of The Red Chord (the band on this bill I personally would be most excited to see, even though I just saw them on Summer Slaughter less than two weeks ago); and The Contortionist… well, I don’t know The Cortionist very well, but reader Hayden Nease is insistent that they’re awesome (E-mail sample: “The Contortionist. Seriously, The Contortionist. No, really, The Contortionist. sursly guize”), and “Flourish,” the new song they’re currently streaming on Noisecreep, certainly tickles me. So consider this an altogether killer bill.
While we wait for dates, here’s a video that The Acacia Strain’s Vincent Bennett recently made for Metal Injection, in which he asks other bands/techs/fans/whatever, “What’s so cool about The Cool Tour?” You, Vincent. You’re what’s so cool about The Cool Tour!
Metal Injection also has some behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot for The Acacia Strain’s new video, “The Hills Have Eyes.” Check that out here.

If you’re a fan of metallic hardcore, then you’re presumably waiting with bated breath and clenched fists for the new Terror record. The California toughguys recently released a four song teaser 7″ and are due to drop the full length Keepers Of The Faith next month, and we’ve partnered with Reaper Records to give one lucky windmilling fanboy copies of these two limited edition vinyl releases.
So how do you win this awesome vinyl package? Answer this question in the comments section below:
Who’s the toughest motherfucker in hardcore (past or present)?
I’ll be picking the winner myself, not based on who *I* think is the toughest motherfucker in hardcore, but on the merits of your entry. I’m looking for thoughtful/interesting/funny/brilliant answers, not just some dude’s name, in order to ensure that someone truly into this shit gets this vinyl package. Remember to comment with a real email address (or include it with your comment if you’re using FB Connect).
If you don’t happen to win, be sure to pre-order your vinyl copy of Keepers Of The Faith from Reaper. (Century Media’s doing the CD version, which you can pre-order here.)

I’m not even really sure what the heck “Stick Tight” means. My mind immediately goes someplace sexual, but I doubt that’s what the new Terror song is about. (In an accompanying press release, vocalist Scott Vogel says “the lyrics are on the blog,” but I’m not sure which blog he means – it’s ain’t the band’s MySpace blog.)
But, whatever, y’know? Terror are one of the most skilled purveyors of metallicized hardcore out there these days, and this song made me kick a Mansion Monkey straight across the atrium as though he were a football and the fountain were the goal post, so it’s all good as far as I’m concerned.
“Stick Tight” will be on Terror’s new album, Keepers of the Faith, which comes out September 14 on Century Media.
You probably know Century Media for their work with groundbreaking, legendary artists like Stuck Mojo and My Own Victim, but they are also home to lesser-known bands like Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, Warbringer, Terror, and deathcore sensations Winds Of Plague and Suicide Silence. In all seriousness, though, I’ve worked with CM in one form or another since the mid-90s, and have nothing but good things to say about the CM crew. In addition to Despise You frontman/ CM warehouse manager Chris Elder, one of the many great people at CM is A&R guy Steve Joh. With the label’s 20th anniversary coming up soon, I figured it would be a great time to catch up with one of the nicest guys in metal and give the label some much-deserved props. Thanks to Steve for his time and help, and thanks to CM for being cool enough to send me promos when I was a teenager with a fanzine back in the day!
Note: I am a fan of both WoP and Suicide Silence. Knowing that they are lightning rods for the (negative) attention of angry metal dorks, I included their names in the headline for this post in hopes of attracting maximum viewership, and therefore giving the most possible publicity to Steve and the bands. Thank you for participating in this exciting social media marketing initiative.

Emmure are currently rocking the fuck headlining the Mosh Lives II tour with Terror and a few Sumeriancore bands. But their hectic schedule didn’t preclude frontman Frankie Palmieri from sitting down with Hardtimes.ca to talk such humdrum interview topics as illegal downloading, independent record labels, advice for new bands, the existence of extraterrestrial life forms, the Illuminati, and Jesusaurus Rex.

I’m not in the mood for fine prose right now, so let’s just do this thing.
Metal Nick at Metal Injection captured the below footage of Necrophagist playing a new song, “Dawn and Demise,” on the recently completed, MetalSucks co-sponsored Summer Slaughter tour. Because it was captured with one camera, no soundboard, etc., it’s not exactly up to the usual high standards of Metal Injection, but it should keep all the Necrophreaks satisfied for the time being.
Our friend Dan Rodriguez at Metal Insider tells us that, according to WBIR-TV, ten people were arrested yesterday at the Knoxville stop of 10 for $10 tour, which offers – duh – ten hardcore bands (including Poison the Well and Madball) for the low low price of ten bucks. The charges range from disorderly conduct to inciting a riot; apparently, a fight broke out, and when the venue’s security guards attempted to intervene, even the fucking band jumped in to give them what-fo’.
But here’s the best part: the fight broke out at 3:30 pm… just as the first band on the bill was taking the stage. So that’s ten dollars well spent.

Here’s what I really like about Terror’s new video for “Rise of the Poisoned Youth”: the way it captures the energy of their live show. If watching this thing doesn’t make you wanna get up on your desk and do a stage dive right now, I don’t know what will.
But I could live without the subplot about the boxers. We get it. You’re hardcore. You’re fighters. You never give up. You know what you’d see if you looked in the dictionary under the word “obvious?”
A definition of the word “obvious,” of course.
Terror are about to hit the road with All Shall Perish, Shai Hulud, and a bunch of bands I could give a fuck about. Still, they put on a pretty killer live show (again, see the above video). Get tour dates here.
And if you’re really bored, here are some photos of chicks in Terror panties.

Standing out in metal is difficult, considering that even the subgenres that splinter off from metal’s whole don’t take long to feel overcrowded. So in an era where bands increasingly have to earn their keep, All Shall Perish worked hard to definitively (and rightfully) make their mark in 2008 amidst the deluge of death metal. The band’s mesh of breakdowns and technical death metal forcefulness wowed many on their latest full length (Awaken the Dreamers) and during their copious touring (including one sponsored by us).
It was before their Providence show on that tour that vocalist Hernan “Eddie” Hermida and bassist Mike Tiner were kind enough to grant us an interview. They seemed to be guys with a good sense of humor about everything, not taking themselves (or anything, really) too seriously during the whole interview. With a dry, absurd wit later blown to bits by their fierce set that evening, the band didn’t seem to typify in person what their music may imply. They’re seemingly just dudes, albeit dudes that play in one of the chief death metal/ hardcore (but certainly not deathcore) bands out there. Eddie and Mike discussed their thoughts on deathcore and their insights into how they compose breakdowns, among other things.
