Byzantine - To Release is to Resolve

Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome to another very special Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and for the second week, we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist for your jamming! Now crank this shit up!

·

Saturnalia Temple To The OtherSaturnalia Temple
To The Other (The Ajna Offensive)
On a playlist with: Electric Wizard, Sons Of Otis, Sleep
Listen To The Other full stream (here)

Now that “Spring” has arrived, we need new jams for the depressing rainy/foggy days to come. So your shrink should be thanking Saturnalia Temple for To The Other, which is a soft and cloudy album with lots of therapeutic potential. Even the outrageously titled “MARCH OF GHA’AGSHEBLAH” listens to you instead of screaming! Feel those slow, crunchy whispers to remind you that even in the season of renewal there’s still dread, but all will be okay!

·

The CrotalsThe Crotals
Fuel! Flames! Blast! (Tenacity)
On a playlist with:
Listen Fuel! Flames! Blast! full stream (here)

In my high school, “rock kids” had hand-me-down guitars or maybe an Epiphone financed by their allowance. They wore corduroy, kept chill, and listened to Wilco. Some of them turned into “metal kids” right around age 21 (coincidence?), but they didn’t forget their roots. Likewise, The Crotals may be rock-turned-metal dudes, as Fuel! Flames! Blast! rocks beneath heavy vocals and super-crunch overdrive!

·

Agnostic FrontAgnostic Front
The American Dream Died (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with: Madball, Sick Of It All, Terror
Listen The American Dream Died full stream (here)

You don’t have to make any risky guesses on the lyrical content of an album titled The American Dream DiedAlso, you likely know what to expect from a broken-household name like Agnostic Front. Just like a faithful dog, TADD meets all expectations, but it’s doubtful whether revolution or whatever is nigh.

·

ApophysApophys
Prime Incursion (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with: Cephalic Carnage, Immersed, Acrania
Listen “Miscreants” and “Requiem For The Absurd” (here)
Watch “The Antidote” playthrough (here)

Debut albums are the best! They showcase a band’s true fighting effort, the attempt to break into a scene and our ears with something fresh and exciting! Or with a sound that’s not fresh or exciting, for Apophys’ first misses that mark by a few ticks. However, they throw back to classic death metal and look good doing it, plus their many, many hooks keep your brain occupied.

·

Morgoth - UngodMorgoth
Ungod (Century Media)
On a playlist with: Bolt Thrower, Asphyx, Obituary
Listen “Black Enemy” (here)

And now for actual classic death metal, Morgoth’s Ungod arrives 20 years after their last album. Good timing, too, cuz it truly sounds fresh as hell. So it’s odd, though, that the more progressive Apophys (above) doesn’t shine as bright despite its modernity. Either way, Ungod can take ya back in time without making you feel too wrinkly.

·

Minsk - The Crash & The DrawMinsk
The Crash & The Draw (Relapse)
On a playlist with: Mouth Of The Architect, Latitudes, Neurosis
Listen The Crash & The Draw full stream (here)
Read Kip Wingerschmidt MetalSucks review (here)

If you haven’t taken a few minutes to read our incredible review of this incredible album, please do! For now: A listener needs to really burrow into The Crash & The Draw to root out all the appreciable moments. In the wrong mood, you might feel it fall flat and lifeless. But in the right moment and with the right mood lighting, you’ve got yourself a big winner!
