Kataklysm - Of Ghosts and Gods

Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to the new Shit That Comes Out Today  again, Friday — your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!

·

RusskajaRusskaja
Peace, Love And Russian Roll (Napalm)
On a playlist with: Tubring, Space Kung-Fu Man, Mindless Self Indulgence
Listen “Rock’n’Roll Today” (here)

Funny thing! I wrote about Russkaja in my first-ever Shit That Comes Out Today. Fuck, that was a while ago, and unlike now I really wrote some stupid shit: “I ain’t gonna be rocking this stuff in the car, or in the shower, or while goose hunting, but if I’m in need of a chortle, a chuckle, or a tee-hee, then Russkaja is the provider.” Like, lol guys, who is this guy?

gatefoldBarshasketh
Ophidian Henosis (Blut & Eisen)
On a playlist with: Caïna, Abyssal, Obsequiae
Listen Ophidian Henosis full stream (here)

Easy to forget how important vocals are in black metal. You may easily be sucked in by the wall of noise made by drums, guitars, etc., beware! In most cases it’s the vocals which make the metal black, giving the otherwise neutral-serious instrumentation that deep, gorgeous sorrow. The human pipes for Barshasketh nail it. The tunes are solid too!

·

GrusomGrusom
Grusom (Kozmik Artifactz)
On a playlist with: Jim Morrison, Corey Taylor, Marilyn Manson
Listen “The Journey” (here)

Hm, hard rock. Dark hard rock, maybe with stoner pretensions? Enter Grusom, whose vocalist sounds like the fuckchild of Corey Taylor and Marilyn Manson (ew). Is it moody or is it too radio? Not sure. But the low-distortion doom musak theme is pure. And they’re obviously trying to have a bit of style. I say rock it!

Kataklysm - Of Ghosts and GodsKataklysm
Of Ghosts And Gods (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with: Being Farted Upon, Sergeant D
Listen “Soul Destroyer” (here)
Read Kip Wingerschmidt’s MetalSucks review (here)

Sometimes you wonder what people think about you and your appreciation of heavy music. What do they think it sounds like? If they were to write a metal song, how would it turn out — with no knowledge of metal whatsoever. These are non-metal folk. Like the Mumford & Sons type (no hate).

MastiphalMastiphal
For A Glory Of All Evil Spirits, Rise For Victory reissue (Nuclear War Now!)
On a playlist with: Furia, Profanum, Besatt
Listen For A Glory Of All Evil Spirits, Rise For Victory reissue full stream (here)

For A Glory Of All Evil Spirits, Rise For Victory is a pretty beast album name. Also songs like “Flames of Fire Full of Hatred” and “Aim”. You get the idea — power, victory, Valhalla, etc. But don’t expect hairy thrash, expect fucking dark serious fucking shit with a bit of synth background and early death vocals.

·

Godhunter Destroyer Of LightGodhunter vs. Destroyer Of Light
Endsville split (Battleground/Heavy Friends)
On a playlist with: infant Mastodon, SuperVoid, The Lion’s Daughter
Listen Endsville split full stream (here)

I kind of like the idea of a band vs. band release. Two groups of guys/gals who try to out-[insert genre] each other. Righteous and stuff. And if you like grimy, doomy, sludgy, nasty shit, then this battle is for you. But let’s say you could put any two bands in the world together for a slug-out. Who vs. who? Comments below.
