Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to the new Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!

raventaleRaventale
Dark Substance Of Dharma
(Solitude)
On a playlist with: Ashbringer, Woods Of Desolation, Panopticon
Listen Dark Substance Of Dharma full stream (here)

Atmospheric black metal typically covers themes like space and meaninglessness and cosmic understanding, etc. etc. It makes sense: that incomprehensibly vast universe out there is pretty belittling. Raventale forewent the space tropes, instead going with mythology and ancient-feeling shit. Equally as belittling (how inconsequential are you in light of the billions who’ve lived and died before?), and equally as spacey, i.e. very effective.

Enthrall To The Void Of Bliss (20 Buck Spin)
On a playlist with: Membaris, Blut Aus Nord, Temple of Baal
Listen Enthrall To The Void Of Bliss full stream (here)

Fans of dark and messy death metal will fall (mostly) in love with Enthrall To The Void Of Bliss. It’s all the intensity of an Ulcerate or Lord Mantis album, without sounding so much like it was written by a serial killer. However, Enthrall does raise some questions: 1) why was the high-frequency band cranked to max during production, and 2) what in the fuck is going on with the fourth track?

kowloon walled cityKowloon Walled City
Grievances (Neurot)
On a playlist with: Pallbearer et al.
Listen Grievances full stream (here)

Kowloon Walled City is perched confidently on the cliff-edge of metal’s expansive reaches — their sound screams metal, but the jammy/rock ‘n’ roll feels take precedence. Fear not: this is a good thing (also, jam does not necessarily preclude metal-ness). A tour through Kowloon’s discography is a pleasurable trip, and probably a necessary one: Grievances is slower, steadier, and doomier, but no less angry. Think what would happen if Bongripper had an ass baby with Junius! Ew!

·

Crystal Lake The SignCrystal Lake
The Sign (Artery)
On a playlist with: Periphery, A Ghost Of Flare, Crossfaith
Listen “Prometheus” (here)

Releases from Japanese bands pop up less often than we’d like. Core/slammy releases from Japanese bands — less often! Crystal Lake has taken all the (Western) slamcore horseshit and made it, for lack of a better word, bearable. The music video for “Prometheus” is a worthy watch: despite their scene-ness, Crystal Lake puts on a good show (warning: cringe moment at the 2:35 mark). BURN BURN BURN, WILL YOU BURN IT DOWN?

He Whose Ox Is GoredHe Whose Ox Is Gored
The Camel, The Lion, The Child (Bleeding Light)
On a playlist with: poor ox :(
Listen The Camel, The Lion, The Child full stream (here)

Gaze for daze. When you combine slow doomy feels with the spaced-out, expressionist noise, you get meditation jammage. It’s the Deafheaven treatment, only the target isn’t black metal. It makes more sense in a postmodern framework — it’s less about the structure (of which there is little) and more about the fluctuating intensities (many fluctuations). Anyway, fluctuate this!

·

Beaten To DeathBeaten To Death
Unplugged (Mas-Kina)
On a playlist with: Gridlink, Extreme Noise Terror, Pig Destroyer
Listen Unplugged full stream (here)

This happens less often than you’d imagine: a band sounds exactly as they’re named. In this case, beaten to death. Unplugged is the actual soundtrack to your actual death beating. It’s weird because this: in a way, you’re enjoying being beaten to death! Deep down, some of us really want to be beaten to death, but are too scared to get beaten to death, probably because that shit would hurt like the goddamn dickens.
