Lemmy’s Funeral is Going to be Broadcast on the Web

motorhead - the world is yours

Yesterday, we reported that Lemmy Kilmister’s memorial this Saturday will occur across the entire Sunset Strip. Which is obviously awesome, and a testament to the influence of such an incredible musician.

But while we hope that thousands of Motörhead fans flood the Strip — and we have no doubt they will! — we also understand that not everyone can shell out money for plane tickets or gas to get to LA for a weekend. Hell, Lemmy would’ve understood.

And so do the remaining members of Motörhead. They’ve decided to broadcast Lemmy’s funeral service on the web, to give everyone who worshipped the Great Man and his work a chance to say goodbye. Not only that, but given how insane LA will be on Saturday, the band has asked that people tune in and mourn in their own way rather than mob the cemetery gates.

The band released the following statement:

“Family and close friends will observe a service at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Hollywood, commencing at 3pm PST and ending at 4.30pm. With such limited space available on-site, we respectfully ask that you don’t attend the cemetery… but we want you ALL to be a part of this, so we are setting up a live feed of the service via the internet on Motörhead’s official You Tube channel.

“Wherever you are, PLEASE get together and watch the service with fellow Motörheadbangers and friends. GO to your favorite bar, or your favorite club, make sure they have access to an internet connection and toast along with us. Or simply invite your pals around and celebrate Lemm’s life at home. Whatever your venue, and however you can, let’s be sure to gather globally on Saturday 9th and celebrate the life of our dear friend and irreplaceable icon.”

The band went on to request that all donations from generous fans be sent to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.

This, if you ask me, is a smart move. Even if Forest Lawn doesn’t get besieged by Motörhead diehards — which it probably will be anyway — not every fan can make it out to California this weekend to rage at the Rainbow all night. So it’s really great to give the whole world a chance to say goodbye together. Now if only they could webcast the shitshow that will be the bathroom stalls at the Rainbow…

So wherever you are, click the link above, pour a glass of Jack (or Coke if you’re straightedge), grab your friends, and take part in a celebration of the greatest metal frontman of all time. Unless you’re in the car at that very second, you have no excuse to miss this.

And hey, on a local note, if you’re in Denver, come by Trve Brewing at 4pm MT, where they’ll be both streaming the memorial service as well as tapping a new beer, named ‘Red Chaos’ after a VHÖL track (umlauts all around). They’ll be blasting Motörhead and toasting Lemmy all night, and I might see you there.
