Polka Cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” Proves a Good Hook is a Good Hook No Matter What the Genre

The Heimatdamisch, a German polka band, have covered AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” (while their vocalist rocks a Ghost shirt, no less). Which would be kinda fun in and of itself, but it also reiterates the importance of utilizing strong hooks in your songwriting. The super-catchy chorus loses none of its infectiousness when transplanted from one genre to another. That really speaks to the quality of the hook, which in turn helps explain why the song is still so goddamn popular nearly forty years after its release. You can keep telling yourself “This is metal, and metal doesn’t need hooks!” all you want, but that doesn’t make it so.

Strap on your lederhosen and enjoy:
