New Mastodon Song, “Show Yourself”: Listen Yourself

  • Axl Rosenberg

What a pleasant surprise! I don’t think anyone expected Mastodon to release another new song from their forthcoming album, Emperor of Sand, just a week after debuting the album’s first single, “Sultan’s Curse.” I wonder if the band is planning on releasing a new track every Friday until the record’s March 31 release?

Whatever. Let’s talk about “Show Yourself”: whereas “Sultan’s Curse” was basically classic Mastodon, “Show Yourself” is basically an upbeat pop song with a proggy guitar solo. It will probably make you wonder what the crap Neurosis’ Scott Kelly was talking about when he said Emperor of Sand is “heavy” and “raw.” Then again, you might not really care: “Show Yourself” will get stuck in your head so bad you’ll think someone nailed it into your skull. I’m saying it’s catchy shit.

Check out “Show Yourself” for yourself below. Emperor of Sand comes out March 31 on Reprise, and can be pre-ordered here. The band begins a tour with Eagles of Death Metal and Russian Circles in April; get dates here.
