Dave Mustaine Reveals His Favorite Megadeth Guitarists in Order of Preference

We all missed this when it occurred back in April, but it sure seems like it would still be fun to discuss now. So let’s discuss: during the aforementioned month, a fan tweeted at Dave Mustaine to express his love of the band’s most recent guitarist, Kiko Loureiro. And then, because he has an innate need to make everyone argue all the time, Mustaine replied with a list of his favorite Megadeth guitarists in descending order. To his credit, Mustaine was humble enough to leave himself off the list this time. Not so much to his credit, the list will probably make you wanna tear your hair out:

  1. Kiko Loureiro (2015 – Present Day)
  2. Marty Friedman (1990 – 1999)
  3. Glen Drover (2004 – 2008)
  4. Chris Poland (1984-1987, 2004)
  5. Al Pitrelli (2000 – 2002)
  6. Mike Albert (Live Only, 1985)
  7. Chris Broderick (2008 – 2014)
  8. Jeff Young (1987 – 1989)

It’s no surprise that Mustaine thinks Loureiro is the cat’s pajamas, even if we all know Friedman is the superior guitarist (sorry, Kiko). But hol-ee fuck… did Chris Broderick sleep with Mustaine’s wife or something? The poor guy is listed behind a live touring guitarist practically no one remembers! And Al Pitrelli, who was only in the band for two years, during which time he appeared one Megadeth album, The World Needs a Hero, which is notable mostly for being better than its predecessor, Risk. Sure, Broderick played on Super Collider, which was the musical equivalent of a Porta Potty explosion, but he also played on Endgame and Thirteen, both of which are pretty good. Even being put behind Glen Drover is kind of an insult (Drover played on one ‘Deth album, United Abominations, which is remembered mostly for its “A Tout La Monde” re-recording with Cristina Scabbia). At the time that Broderick left Megadeth, Mustaine blamed the split on management… but this list feels like he was deliberately trying to shit in Broderick’s Cheerios.

But maybe not. Maybe this is Mustaine’s honest opinion. For the sake of argument, let’s pretend that it is so we can move onto the fun part: our own lists of Megadeth guitarists from best to worst. Mine is below; share your own in the comments section and then get your debate on.

  1. Marty Friedman (duh)
  2. Chris Poland
  3. Jeff Young
  4. Chris Broderick/Kiko Loureiro (I honestly don’t have a preference at this point, we’ll have to revisit when Loureiro has made a few more albums with the band)
  5. Glen Drover
  6. Al Pitrelli
  7. Mike Albert
