Jesse Hughes from Eagles Of Death Metal Calls Student-Led Anti-Gun Protests “Pathetic and Disgusting”

Gives Eagles of Death Metal frontman Jesse Hughes some credit: few people could squander the sympathy of surviving a terrorist attack the way he has.

For those of you who somehow don’t know: the Eagles of Death Metal were performing at Le Bataclan in Paris the night of the horrific November 2015 terrorist attacks. Three months laters, Hughes decried the call for stricter regulations on firearms, becuse “French gun control [didn’t] stop a single fucking person from dying at the Bataclan.” And three months after that, Hughes made Islamophobic comments while suggesting that Le Bataclan’s own security team had somehow been involved in the attacks; these comments were deemed sufficiently insensitive that two French festivals dropped the Eagles of Death Metal from their line-up that year.

Now Hughes has taken to Instagram to attack the kids who, after surviving the Parkland shooting in Florida, launched the #NeverAgain movement. That movement led this past weekend’s March for Our Lives, in which hundreds of thousands of protestors called on Washinton to enact more effective gun control laws.

The post includes a cartoon likening stricter gun control as a means of stopping mass shootings to a man cutting of his penis to help with rape prevention (which is 100% logical, because guns, like reproductive organs, are something everyone is born with, and are necessary for the survival of our species. Oh wait.) The image is accompanied by a charming message in which Hughes, who is 45-years-old, accused the teenaged leaders of #NeverAgain of “exploiting the death” of their classmates for “a few Facebook likes and some media attention” and the chance to play hooky from school:

“Obviously….The best thing to do to combat chronic abusers and disregarders of the law(like the law against Murder) is to……..pass another Law!…..Genius!!!…… but before we pass this law we’re going to denigrate the memory and curse ourselves by exploiting the death of 16 of our fellow students for a few Facebook likes and some media attention….and look how well civil rights abuses as it concerns firearms helped to protect me and my friends in Paris!!!!! This almost sounds like the plan of like a kid maybe like a high school student….!. Oh wait that’s right…. The Whitney Houston song about letting the children lead the way wasn’t actually had operating paradigm for life…..And when the truth don’t line up with your bullshit narrative just hold your breath and stamp your feet and refused to except it…. then take multiple days off of school playing hooky at the expense of 16 of your classmates blood….!…. it might be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic and disgusting……As the survivor of a mass shooting I can tell you from first-hand experience that all of you protesting and taking days off from school insult the memory of those who were killed and abuse and insult me and every other lover of liberty by your every action…..Long Live Rock’n’Roll….. and may everyone of these disgusting vile abusers of the dead live as long as possible so they can have the maximum amount of time to endure their shame….and be Cursed….”

I mean… I don’t really know what to say about this. Here we have a man who got a lot of media attention for surviving a mass shooting using his social media account to spread his beliefs by insulting survivors of a different mass shooting who have gotten a lot of media attention for using social media to spread their beliefs. Even if you agree with Hughes’ political views, your mind must boggle at the logic. I can’t tell if Hughes really believes what he’s saying or if he’s just jealous that these young men and women are getting more attention than he did.

If I could ask Hughes one question, it would be this: “What makes your pain more valid than theirs?” Hughes escaped Le Bataclan via the backstage area after the shooting started; the three most prominent leaders of #NeverAgain — Emma González, David Hogg, and Cameron Kasky — were all forced to hide inside the school while the shooting occurred. The shooting Hughes experienced was part of a relatively uncommon incident; when the Parkland shooting happened, it was the thirtieth mass shooting in America this year alone (and there have been more since). I just don’t understand why Hughes thinks it’s okay for him to give interviews and say whatever he wants but these kids are somehow just in it for the attention.
