Big Scenic Nowhere Project Features Current and Former Members of Opeth, Queens of the Stone Age, Monolord, and More

It’s not shocking that the Palm Desert spawned its own popular music scene in the ’90s; after all, there’s nothing to do there except get baked and write riffs. In fact, I’d wager that’s why Gary Arce (Yawning Man) and Bob Balch (Fu Manchu) called their new project Big Scenic Nowhere. Just a hunch.

In addition to Arce and Balch, Big Scenic Nowhere features an array of notable guest musicians, many of whom are also from the Palm Desert stoner rock scene: their debut EP, Dying on the Mountain, features Tony Reed (Mos Generator), Mario Lalli (Fatso Jetson, Yawning Man), Per Wiberg (Spiritual Beggars, ex-Opeth), Bill Stinson (Yawning Man), Nick Oliveri (Mondo Generator, ex-Kyuss, Etc), Lisa Alley and Ian Graham (both of the Well) and Thomas v. Jäger (Monolord). Not too shabby, eh?

Dying On The Mountain will come out September 13th via Blues Funeral Recordings, but one of its two songs, “Towards the Sun,” is available for your streaming pleasure now, courtesy of Brooklyn Vegan. It’s extremely catchy Sabbath worship. If that appeals to you — and it ought to! — go ahead and push “play”:
