Shit That Comes Out Today: August 30th, 2019
It is Friday, my dudes. Whatever that means to you — whether it’s an excuse to get hammered, maybe the start of a much-needed weekend getaway, or even if it’s just another day of benign existence — we’ve got a compendium of the latest heavy tunes to keep you going.
Bowels of Earth (Century Media)
The court may have decided that the other Entombed was the “legit” one, but that doesn’t stop LG Petrov’s version from ripping just as hard. Bowels of Earth is a kick of Swedish OSDM and lighthearted death ‘n roll that honors Entombed A.D.’s roots and certainly doesn’t feel like it has anything to prove. It’s fun. It’s groovy. What more do you need?
Void Lustre (Silent Pendulum/Moment of Collapse)
FFO Wolves In The Trone Room, Isis
Listen “Forged by the Tide“
Following up their 2015 masterwork Cloak of Ash, Australia’s Hope Drone have returned with the earth-shaking Void Lustre. A moody blend of “cascadian” and post metal forges an intensity that’s atmospheric in its own rite, ever pressing forward without falling into extended ambient interludes or other characteristic tropes. As instruments fall in and out of sync with each other, the music begins to breathe its own life and surge with earth-shaking energy.
Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave (20 Buck Spin)
FFO Ossuarium, Tomb Mold
Listen “Dripping Tombs”
The second powerhouse in Witch Vomit’s rancid catalogue, Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave spews some of Portland’s nastiest riffs into the sonic sphere. It shreds along in a distinctly 21st-century-American style, incorporating elements of traditional U.S. death metal with the more extreme Swedish and Finnish approaches. Nostalgic, yet refined and highly modern.
Hey, it’s not every day that you wake up and get to hear a new Tool album! Savor it. I’m listening now, and Fear Inoculum is definitely surpassing my expectations. Tool are still trippy as hell, Danny Carey is still an incredible drummer, and while this is by no means their heaviest album, the tasteful, heady psychedelia teases the dopamine receptors in a more subtle way. They’ve clearly traded the hooker dicks for something a little less grating, like ’70s prog rock and Ambien. I’m all for it if this marks a new direction for the band — it still sounds like Tool, but more. . . mesmerizing?
