Rumor: Guns N’ Roses Are Writing a Song for the New Terminator Movie

In case you haven’t noticed, nostalgia is Hollywood’s current drug of choice. They take an IP you loved as a kid, make a few small, mostly meaningless changes so it seems “new,” load it up with Easter eggs and callbacks to the original to make you feel smart and cool and wistful, and ta-dah!, watch the money pour in. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, whoo boy, does it ever.

This being the case, it’s not the least bit surprising that there is now a rumor which posits Guns N’ Roses will have a new song in the upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate, the franchise’s fourth (!) reboot in sixteen years (Marc Bernardin drolly deemed the series the “fetch” of movies). After all, almost thirty years ago, the band’s smash hit “You Could Be Mine” was featured prominently on the soundtrack of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, with Arnold Schwarzenegger appearing in the song’s video as the Terminator himself, and even using a literal box of guns n’ roses at one point during the flick.

And it’s not like they could do the obvious thing and just put “You Could Be Mine” in the new movie — ’cause they played that card already in Terminator Salvation.

So take this with a microscopic grain of salt for the time being, but this Australian GN’R fan page says the band will have a new tune on the Dark Fate soundtrack:

“A source who was working On Terminator dark fate has informed that 4 members of guns n roses went to a private viewing of a rough copy of the upcoming Arnold Schwarzenegger sequel movie to see if they want to put a song on the soundtrack. Apparently, Slash was at axls house to record overdubs on a song for the rush release. At this point the song name is unknown. But yes 100% verified. Guns n roses new music.”

I’m tempted crack wise about how flimsy this is, and how the person writing it may not actually understand what the phrase “100% verified” means, but the last time I busted an Australian’s balls over a GN’R-related rumor, they turned out to be more or less correct.

So instead, I’ll just point out that a) Guns N’ Roses are constantly at the center of crazy rumors that turn out to be B.S., b) this is the second time just this year that there has been a rumored impending release of new Guns music (and for some reason the story always involves Slash going to Axl’s house, which is a bizarre recurring detail), and c) last we actually heard from anyone in the band, they had some new material being passed around, but “haven’t actually done anything” (Slash’s words) with that material yet. So you decide if you think this latest rumor has legs or not.

To be clear, I do think there will be new Guns N’ Roses music featuring Axl, Slash, and Duff at some point; they stand to make too much money not to release anything. I’m just not convinced that there will be new Guns N’ Roses music in 2019.

In any case, we should know one way or the other soon, ’cause Dark Fate comes out November 1. Guns N’ Roses have a handful of festival appearances lined up in the coming weeks; get those dates here.
