Listen to the First New Genghis Tron Song in 13 Years

After months of teases, the (mostly) reunited Genghis Tron have at last announced their first new full-length in thirteen years: it’s called Dream Weapon, and it will be out March 26 on Relapse. As previously reported, the Kurt Ballou-produced album finds original Genghis Tron-ers Hamilton Jordan (guitar) and Michael Sochynsky (synths) joined by new vocalist Tony Wolski and Sumac/Baptists drummer Nick Yacyshyn (vocalist/programmer Mookie Singerman is not part of the reunion).

The album announcement alone would be cause for celebration… but that announcement has also been accompanied by the release of the title track, which means you can hear new Genghis Tron, like, immediately.

Personally, I really like this… but I am beyond curious to hear what other longtime Genghis Tron fans think. In some ways, it sounds very much like the Genghis Tron you remember: the echo-chamber clean vocals, Sochynsky’s hypnotic synths, and Jordan’s vertiginous guitar playing are all present… heck, there’s a section in the middle which seems to be directly quoting the title track from Genghis Tron’s last full-length, 2008’s Board Up the House.

But Singerman’s acidic screeches are gone, as is any trace of the psychotic grindcore/electronica hybrid that first garnered the band attention on Cloak of Love (2005) and Dead Mountain Mouth (2006). If it hadn’t been so long since Genghis Tron’s last release, I don’t think anyone would bat an eye at this creative evolution… but I’m not sure how people looking for something a bit closer to vintage Genghis Tron will react. I suspect Genghis Tron admirers are more open-minded than your average bear — I mean, they’d have to be to have ever liked this band in the first place, right? — but in metal there’s always a chance that the orthodoxy rejects that which they perceive as being even vaguely heretical.

Give “Dream Weapon” the song a listen below and see whatcha think. Pre-order Dream Weapon the album here. View the Dream Weapon the cover art, by Trevor Naud, at the bottom of this post. It continues the band’s unusual tradition of having covers that depict some sort of habitat.
