Deafheaven Continue to Move Away From Metal on New Single “The Gnashing”

“Have Deafheaven now fully crossed over into the Pitchfork / Stereogum demographic?” Vince wondered when Deafheaven released their most recent single, “Great Mass of Color,” last month. And now that the band have announced a new album, Infinite Granite, and released the second single from that record, “The Gnashing,” I’d say the answer is “Yup.”

I know I just said this yesterday about that Biffy Clyro cover of Metallica’s “Holier Than Thou,” but “The Gnashing” is like three production changes away from being a Ghost track. Some harmonized vocals, fewer trippy guitar effects, bada bing, bada boom, it’s Ghost. Maybe I just have Ghost on the brain for some reason.

In any case, I like “The Gnashing” quite a bit. I say that as someone who thought “Great Mass of Color” was a smidge too indie rock. I could get down with a whole album of material like “The Gnashing.”

Listen to “The Gnashing” below. Infinite Granite comes out August 20 on Sergeant House. Pre-order/pre-save/pre-download/pre-pre-pre here.
