Royal Blood Cover “Sad But True,” Metallica Share 1993 Live Cut of “Of Wolf and Man”
How many new live versions and covers have Metallica put out so far to promote the upcoming 30th anniversary super-duper-extra-special-deluxe edition of The Black Album? There’s been so many I’ve completely lost track and it’d take an hour to link them all here, but if you didn’t already eat them up in real time you can easily seek them out (this is a good starting point).
Here’s the latest: a live version of “Of Wolf and Man” recorded on May 22, 1993 at Maimarktgelände in Mannheim, Germany. The track will be included on the Live At Maimarktgelände 2xCD included in the Black Album deluxe box set due out on September 10 (pre-order here).
In addition to the reissue, Metallica will release The Metallica Blacklist, an album featuring 50+ covers of Black Album songs by a diverse range of artists including Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Stapleton and Phoebe Bridgers. The latest is a cover of “Sad But True” by the English rock duo Royal Blood, recent favorites of mine. The covers album comes out on October 1.

Metallica have been deep in “some pretty serious writing” for their next album since last November with the most recent update, indicating ten songs were partially written, coming this past May via frontman James Hetfield.
