Sting: “I’m a Heavy Metal Singer”

Rick Beato recently released a new interview with Sting (the British musician, not the American professional wrestler), and it includes this rather bizarre assertion:

“[Vocal] Register is interesting. Most heavy metal singers sing up there, so I’m a heavy metal singer – but I have a little more melody.

“It’s the same [kind of thing]; to get above the noise of the band you need that register. You can’t be a baritone with a rock band, really.”

In terms of old men who don’t actually know much about heavy metal saying things that are sure to enrage some members of the extreme music community, this seems up there with Pete Townshend’s assertion that The Who “invented heavy metal.”

I don’t think it’s worth getting all that worked about, though. Like I said, I think these are elder gentlemen who don’t really understand what they’re saying. I mean, his assertion about baritones in rock bands alone is nucking futs (someone play this dude some Type O Negative immediately). So, like, whatever. Sting has been rich and famous for a billion years. No shit he’s out of touch.

You can watch the entire interview below.
