Video: Mercyful Fate Play Their First Show In 23 Years, Debut New Song

0

Few if any bands are as influential on extreme metal as Mercyful Fate. Though modern-day fans of, say, goregrind might find the Danish band’s galloping rhythms and King Diamond‘s piercing falsetto to be less than hardcore, it’s undeniable that metal’s underground simply wouldn’t exist the Fate’s all-in approach to satanism, theatricality, and unorthodox riffage. And last night, Mercyful Fate played their first show in 23 years — and debuted a new song to boot.

As you’ll see in the clip below, Mercyful Fate took the stage last night, June 2nd, at the Expo Plaza in Hanover, supporting Volbeat. His Majesty is in fine form, wearing a series of evil-ass helmets instead of his usual top hat. During the show, the band performed a new song titled “The Jackal of Salzburg,” which will be featured on their upcoming studio album — their first since 1999’s 9 — due out on Metal Blade Records, tentatively in 2023. This is just the first of the band’s many upcoming European shows.

Check out a setlist for the show below, via Blabbermouth.
