System of a Down’s Serj Tankian Teases an Announcement for “Something Next Year”

0

It’s been nearly 17 years since their last studio release, but fans of System of a Down haven’t stopped holding out hope for new music, bless their hearts. And while we’ve gotten a couple new tracks in recent years and a sporadic number of live shows, the constant discourse around the “will they, won’t they” conversation has regularly had cold water thrown on it thanks to ongoing bickering within the band. Yet during a recent interview, frontman Serj Tankian tossed a tiny morsel of hope to fans that something might be on the horizon.

During a recent interview with Kyle Meredith, Tankian was asked if there were any plans for System of a Down in the near future. Though he remained cagey about that prospect, he still answered the question.

“As of now, we haven’t talked about anything. We will be making an announcement about something next year that I can’t really tell you about. So there is that. But further than that, I can’t really say.”

That’s not a no!

I know that to the trve kvlt metalheads, System of a Down is typically seen as a surface level band that nu-metal kiddies lose their minds over, but they’re more than that. Given their meteoric rise to prominence during the tumultuous period during and right after 9/11, the band is intrinsically linked to a specific moment in time to a lot of fans. Given the current political landscape, I’d say it’s high time a band like System of a Down step back into the spotlight.

Here’s hoping it’s more than just a single or something and we get a little more substance to that announcement soon.
