Tool Bassist Justin Chancellor Says the Band Has ‘Many Ideas Cooking’ for Next Album

0

It may not feel like it, but it’s already been four years since Tool released Fear Inoculum. Maybe that’s just what getting older is like as the years kinda melt into each other, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is it’s been a minute since Tool put out new music.

Now, I know what you’re going to say — we waited forever and a day between 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum, so waiting for new Tool music is nothing new. Fair. But apparently, we may not end up having to wait too much longer, as bassist Justin Chancellor revealed in an interview with The Vinyl Guide podcast that the band’s got some ideas cooking for their followup and they might hit the studio in 2024.

“We’ve got many ideas cooking. We haven’t recorded anything yet. But we’re quite busy until — I guess until after the spring of next year touring. So once that’s done, we’re gonna get back in the studio and knuckle down and put some of it together. We’ve already had a few pretty decent sessions of writing. So we’ve got the ingredients in place. We’ve just gotta really bang it out and spend that time when we’re not touring.”

Tool’s been busy as of late, touring all over the place. Hell, just this past weekend they headlined Aftershock and then went on to help Metallica close out the Power Trip festival. With yet more shows planned in the coming months, they’re going to be busy still.

Chancellor was also asked about whether Tool had any b-sides from the Fear Inoculum sessions or any previously unreleased tracks that could potentially make their way to a new album. As you’d expect from an insanely creative band like Tool, they’ve definitely got some music in the vault somewhere.

“Yeah, tons from the last album. We have tons of ideas, but not recorded to the standard we’d put on an album. Just kind of, I’d say, lots of demoed stuff. And then just tons of ideas just kind of stored away.”

So yeah, we might not have to wait too much longer for new Tool music. In the meantime, there’s plenty of chances to catch them live, as evidenced by the tour dates listed below.
