Metallica Won the Best Metal Performance GRAMMY, Rob Trujillo Accepted the Award Alone

0

We’ve been saying it for a while that the GRAMMYs don’t fucking matter when it comes to metal and apparently it looks like the dudes in Metallica feel the same way. During the untelevised portion of the GRAMMY ceremony, Metallica took home the Best Metal Performance award for the title track of last year’s 72 Seasons.

As the stage band played a half-assed cover of Ozzy’s “Crazy Train,” bassist Rob Trujillo took to the stage all by himself, immediately telling people that Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and Kirk Hammett couldn’t be there because they were “with their families.” What a nice sentiment — but wait, Trujillo’s got a family too. I like to think he lost a bet or pulled the shortest straw and was like “FUCK” when he got the news. I mean, who wants to sit through a ceremony that no one’s even really watching?! At least his trip to the ceremony was short because he lives in southern California.

Metallica’s “72 Seasons” beat out Ghost’s cover of Iron Maiden’s song “Phantom of the Opera,” Disturbed’s song “Bad Man,” Slipknot’s “Hive Mind,” and Spiritbox’s “Jaded.”

The Best Metal Performance award was the only one Metallica took home last night, despite being nominated for three. Paramore won the Best Rock Album award, beating out 72 Seasons, Foo Fighters’ But Here We Are, Greta Van Fleet’s Starcatcher, and Queens of the Stone Age’s In Times New Roman…

As for the Best Rock Performance award, Metallica’s “Lux Æterna,” Arctic Monkeys’ “Sculptures of Anything Goes,” Foo Fighters’ “Rescued,” and Black Pumas’ “More Than A Love Song” was bested by Boygenius’ “Not Strong Enough.”

All of this is to say that none of it really matters in the grand scheme of things. The GRAMMYs don’t take rock and metal seriously, so we’ll be back here next year talking about another meaningless award.
