Babymetal Would Cover This Metallica Track If Given the Chance

0

Ever since bursting back onto the scene in 2022, Japanese kawaii-metal band Babymetal has seen an international resurgence thanks to the release of a new album and an extensive touring schedule with the likes of Dethklok and Sabaton. As needlessly divisive as their mere existence seems to be for sweaty metalheads everywhere, they’re content singing and dancing about chocolate and metal all over the fuckin’ place whether you like it or not.

During a recent interview with Metal Hammer writer Rich Hobson, band members Su-metal, Momometal, and Moametal took time to answer some fan questions. And while most of the questions were things like “most memorable tour stop” and “favorite country to visit,” one person asked what feels like a pretty innocent question, but will likely end up sparking totally reasonable discourse online: “If you could cover any metal song, what would you choose?”

Nightwish’s Storytime was mentioned, as was Bring Me The Horizon’s Lost, but Moametal that shot her shot with the biggest of ’em all — Metallica. Her choice of song, however, will likely get people talking….

“I can’t choose just one! Metallica’s “St. Anger”… Ah! Bring Me The Horizon’s “Mother Tongue” is also good. Slipknot’s “Psychosocial” too! But Electric Callboy’s “We Got The Moves” also seems to be suitable for Babymetal. It’d be fun to do Måneskin’s “Mammamia.” I can’t stop dreaming. This kind of delusion is a reward.”

Now, before you freak out about how terrible St. Anger was — and you’d be right about that for the most part — think about it. Babymetal doing “St. Anger” would be a laugh riot. Not only would it be funny to hear a cutesy version of that trash can-tinged track, but their backing band fucking rip. They’d tear the doors off that song.

Oh and don’t get me started about hearing a kawaii version of “Psychosocial.” That would be almost too much. …I kinda want to hear it now…

You can read the rest of the interview over at Metal Hammer right now.
