For Some Reason, This Is Spinal Tap 2 is Now In Production

0

Almost 50 years after the original aired, the official sequel to This Is Spinal Tap, This Is Spinal Tap 2, has entered production.

The mockumentary is being filmed in New Orleans, at least initially. Rob Reiner is still directing, and Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer will reprise their original roles from the first film. Reiner himself will be returning as documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi, of course.

Reiner says about the forthcoming film:

“I recently spoke to Marty DiBergi, who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer came up with the plot of the film, which is that Spinal Tap are getting back together 15 years later for one final performance. Apparently, Questlove and Trisha Yearwood will make appearances alongside veteran guests Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Garth Brooks.

When the news of the sequel was first announced, we didn’t have a very favorable opinion of how this would turn out:

“There’s only one way I will consider supporting this movie: if they do some terrible modern scene shit. In the same way that we get “Gimme Some Money” and “(Listen to the) Flower People” in the original, I want to see that St. Hubbins did a bad nu-metal album and scenecore record in the 40 years since we last saw him. I want Methods of Mayhem via Spinal Tap. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of old-dude hair metal jokes, right?”

From what we know about the ideas in the film so far, this might not as off base as originally thought.
