POLL: IS THE CURRENT TREND OF BANDS PERFORMING OLD ALBUMS IN THEIR ENTIRETY A GIMMICK?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 3:00pm by MetalSucks

A few years ago Slayer performed Reign in Blood in its entirety, a year later Metallica did Master of Puppets, and now Exodus are gonna do Bonded by Blood, Judas Priest are doing British Steel, Motley Crue are doing Dr. Feelgood, Ratt are doing Out of the Cellar, Aerosmith are doing Toys in the Attic, Melvins are doing Houdini, etc. What does the MetalSucks Haterade Mafia think; is this trend lame, or is it cool?

  1. RandyxJames says:

Don’t forget the classic lineup of Anthrax did this with ‘Among The Living’ for their short reunion tour. Wish I could’ve seen that.

  2. ian says:

Keep in mind that when a band plays their album (old or new) in it’s entirety, there will be at least one song that they have NEVER, EVER played before. That in itself is the value.

  3. Eye of Newt says:

Queensrÿche did Mindcrime I and II together, and Phish used to do a cover of someone’s full album (Dark Side of the Moon, etc.) every Halloween.
Considering the decreasing level of output of many of these bands, it’s at least a guarantee you’re going to hear some good shit.

  4. alexwank says:

more like “metallica should be forced to do this”

god i hope the term ‘haterade’ doesn’t get co-opted into the majority lexicon. i loathe that term. seems so lame

  5. infern0 says:

playing albums in their entirety is great. some albums are just meant to be listened to front to back, hearing them live and in person this way is pretty cool.
on the flip side some albums fucking blow goats and should never be play live at all.

  6. bearbomb says:

I went with “lame” because it’s almost like saying “hey we only have one good album.” There are exceptions though, like Slayer’s Reign In Blood because it’s so fucking quick. When I saw them live they did the whole album and it was over and done with in no time.

  7. UpInSmoke says:

I saw Slayer on tour for the 20th anniversary for “Reign in Blood” and they played in it’s enirety following a regular set. It’s was actually very unexpected which made it even more of a treat for the fans.

  8. shep says:

It’s great to have bands play something other than the same top10 or so and a few off their new album so I’d say it’s great, so long as they pick a good album anyway.

  9. joshkid says:

I think it’s pretty fuckin’ cool to play whole albums. But only the albums that are really great, that basically define the band. Most of the time there are at least like 4 or 5 kickass songs that were never played live!!!

  10. HagstromSpeed says:

Alls I gotta say is BTBAM and Mastodon…..those 2 concerts fucking RULED and they played their new albums through their entirety, I believe progressive bands are best at doing this….NEW DREAM THEATER CD MAYBE?!?!?!?!

  11. joshkid says:

haha! just saw an article quoting Joe Perry from Aerosmith. He says they’ll be playing the whole new album on tour!

  12. RobotScythe says:

Overall, I think it’s cool. But you’re right, all of a sudden it seems to be the thing to do.

British Steel isn’t my favorite album, but hell, at least they’re not doing Turbo or Point Of Entry all the way through.

  13. American Hate says:

Agreed. I would rather hear Stained Class, but still – British Steel kicks major ass. I got my tickets – Orhcestra seating bitches!

    • RobotScythe says:

Oh, I’m going to the show for sure. I like British Steel, but Painkiller, Screaming… and Sad Wings are my faves by Priest.

  14. enemyofgod72 says:

I voted “No, it fuckin rulz” but with hesitation. Slayer doing Reign In Blood or Metallica doing “Master” is completely fuckin’ cool but the Crue or Ratt still performing anything is lame. It depends on the band and the album. If Slayer decided to play Divine Intevention in it’s entirety or Metallica decided to play “Load” then that would suck and no one would go. Overall bands from the beginning of modern metal playing their best work from their hayday is fucking awesome on the otherhand lameass bands playing crappy albums will always suck.

  15. Gary S. says:

Melvins performing Houdini live is about as awesome as it gets.

  16. Anthony says:

    Haterade

  17. sean says:

coheed and cambria played all 4 of their albums in their entirety for their neverender tour.

  18. Garske says:

I get to see Priest perform British Steel in it’s entirety in July, pretty excited for that.

Would love to see more artists do this actually, considering they have excellent albums that flow well and they will still play other material before or afterwards. I.E: COLORS:LIVE.

  19. Ian says:

The only thing which makes a once awesome piece of media now old and lame is you. You’ve aged, you’ve wised-up, and you have most likely developed a keen ear for poorly written music/lyrics which unabashedly colors your current perspectives on media from the past.

Toss up the horns, pretend your 12 again, and quit ruining the concert asshole! :P

  20. Glenn says:

Yes, it’s (usually) lame but I wouldn’t always say it’s an admission of irrelevance. Irrelevant to whom? Certainly not their fans. To a 12-year old rap fan? Probably, but then lots of things are irrelevant to a 12-year old rap fan.

So, I can’t vote because my choice isn’t available. Bastards.

  21. drumb says:

This is great idea that could get better, like:
    - Refused reforming and performing The Shape Of Punk To Come
    -Shellac doing At Action Park
-Melvins playing Black Sabbath’s Paranoid (Fuck yeah)
    -Helmet doing Betty
    -Tool doing Aenima
    -Nomeansno doing Wrong

BTW: only Metallica should be allowed to suck.

  22. Mike says:

Primus did Seas of Cheese and Frizzle Fry. That was the fucking shit.

  23. Mrpeumo says:

Motley Crue are only allowed to play their homonimous album. That’s their best album, and with Jhon corabi doing vocals of course.

  24. Sam says:

It just feels like a smart business decision to me on the part of the bands. As much as I love the music, I realize that these guys gotta eat too. Playing old albums in their entirety makes sense because, for one, it brings out the old school fans who claim that “so-and-so really sold out after their third album, but their first album kicks ass!” Plus, it brings out the younger crowd who never had a chance to see most of those old songs performed live when they were new. In these crappy economic times, it pretty much just makes sense all around.

  25. Screamin' Demon says:

Not for an entire tour. One leg is alright, if the album they’re playing live fully is one they have just been touring and they want to make one or two legs playing it all live. For Judas Priest, I think in 1991 they should have played all of Painkiller on Operation Rock N’ Roll tour…that would have been awesome.
