NEW PERIPHERY SINGER SOUNDS LIKE THE OLD PERIPHERY SINGER WHO SOUNDS LIKE THE CURRENT HAUNTED SHORES SINGER WHO SOUNDS LIKE…

Monday, March 1st, 2010 at 3:30pm by

peripheryLast month Periphery replaced singer Chris Baretto with new guy Spencer Sotelo while Periphery-soundalikes Haunted Shores took on Baretto to fill their vacant singer slot. While Haunted Shores countered almost immediately with a new Baretto-sung track, Periphery had yet to show off Sotelo’s pipes… until now.

Periphery just posted a new version of their song “Light” featuring Sotelo’s vocals; the song had previously been available with Baretto. There’s also an album teaser featuring clips from various songs with Sotelo’s vocals on them. I don’t have Baretto’s version of “Light” on hand anywhere to cross-reference, but from memory I’d have to say that the new guy sounds a helluva lot like the old guy; he sounds damn good. But the ultimate test will be in the live setting — can Sotelo nail these notes on stage, and can he match Baretto’s energy? The last we’d want is a Scar Symmetry-like fiasco to unfold. I guess we’ll find out when Periphery open for Fear Factory on an otherwise yawn-worthy bill this Spring.

I’ma see these bitches on wednesday.

god damnit…Periphery is going to ruin the music with the vocals on this album, I can already tell.

    • NPC

I’ve become so used to listening to the instrumental versions of the songs that it’s almost distracting having vocals in the mix. I don’t think they sound -bad-, I’m just not used to it.

As an aside, does anyone else think Chris Baretto sounds a lot like Randy Blythe from Lamb of God? Just sayin’.

I really love the way Bulb (Misha) writes music. He’s a master at creating riffs. I just can’t stand the vocals that sound like the vocalist is about to burst into tears with every note. The most annoying thing that any vocalist can do is purposely inhale very loudly after everything they say. Know what I mean?

        • moldytoast

Even worse…exhaling in the form of a “eeeeeYAOW” at the end of every line.

      • pariah

are there demos from this band available anywhere? no myspace…

        • BTK666

Demo versions are available from Misha’s (Bulb) soundclick account.

        • Skanes

Google “bulb soundclick”, there are plenty of songs on there, free to download. I had a pack from sometime in 2008 or early 2009 with 110+ songs from them. I still have them but I have no idea where I got them, I remember taking a long time to find the pack though.

            thanks for the help guys

I saw Periphery 2 nights in a row last month and I assure you Spencer can indeed hit all those notes.

Whoever touched up that promo shot really needs to learn how to use Photoshop.

      What’s wrong with the photo?

      Spencer sounds awesome!

        It has some weird shadows.

I think it’s HDR, although it’s being used rather badly here.

Your mom should’ve learn to use a condom.

ha nice you mentioned haunted shores, I remember getting a demo from them outside of Jaxx like 4 years ago or something. they’ve improved immensely, kudos!

and btw, I’m mad at you metalsucks, I don’t believe you posted the Canadian dates for God Forbid/Periphery/Kittie (only the original dates w/o the late added ones). I might be wrong, but being the God Forbid fan I am, if I missed thursday’s show I would have been mad! of course it probably should be my responsibility to check their website more often..

  • afrost

Spencer’s range is ridiculous. Way better than Chris

  • moldytoast

I saw Periphery in the Veil of Maya tour two weekends ago. I wasn’t too familiar with their material beforehand so I don’t have much to compare to. But let it be known that his voice sounded fantastic. Excellent range, no wimpy ass falsetto at all.

  • SonOF

It’s bizarre how this band loses amazingly talented musicians and somehow replaces them with individuals who are AS GOOD OR BETTER. Periphery is like a fricken talent factory.

    • Strapping Young Lad

haha, indeedy. I still miss Casey, I thought he was the best. Spencer though, man…. those high notes on light are nuts!

  • BTK666

New singer blows, but the old one was a cock head. Seems like Misha has had his work cut out for him. Most Vocalists with the skills to sit in the mix amidst three guitars and have their vocal lines stand out generally aren’t interested in doing music with as much of a metal influence. Personally I think they should have tried to organize something with the former Tesseract singer Abi. That would be a fucking combo and a half!

    • Strapping Young Lad

I miss Abi…. but the new guy is great too. Have you heard him?? Tesseract sounds even better than they did before!… no offense to Abi. He rules!

  • Watty

    MIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAA.

  • PatrickSTL

I don’t like any band from Sumerian, and I especially don’t get the love for this band.
I love clean vocals, I just don’t think this guys particular clean vocals are anything to write home about.

But, props for not sounding like everything else out there.

  • Skanes

This isn’t the first version of this song they recorded with Spencer. This one doesn’t grab my balls like the other versions did. :(.

What the fuck ever though, I’m still a huge Periphery fan.

  • DustintheWind

This is why i love Every Time I Die so much. In metal where so many singers are the same, mediocre, etc… Keith Buckley is not only an amazing songwriter but a charismatic unique frontman with a great voice… Ok so i kinda have a man crush on him, it’s not like i think of him when im banging my girlfriend or anyth… Nevermind

  • Corey Borger

    Sotelo and Baretto Law Firm.
    We sound just alike =]

  • uLy

Fuck i hate this band and fuck is it the most obnoxious thing in the world to see updates about them replacing one shit singer with another one.

Fuck this band, i’ve never seen more garbage hype for a band yet to release a single fucking interesting piece of completed music.

    • http://www.heavyblogisheavy.com Jimmy

I believe they just did. You mad?

  • Casey

Eh, how does Haunted Shores sound anything like periphery besides the fact that they share a guitarist? Baretto sounded like crap live to begin with and in my opinion didn’t really even tap what Spencer does. Spencer sounded just as good with his old band. I just feels there’s a lot more available for him to do with Periphery.

Someone tell Haunted Shores to just go back to being instrumental or get Casey Sabol to step out of his pop rock poop hole, because Chris is just ruining tracks for me.

  • metalatl

vox sound like lamb of god
sounds like a more metal btbam or protest
i like it good direction for them

  • kyle

spencer had a little experiment Eyes of Oedipus like early 2008maybe 2007 id been following there little updates on music clips and stuff it was actually fucking awsome. check out myspcae they still might have that song Eclipse its kinda of shitty quality but if you can turn it up good man thats some badass shit dude

  • Andres (DR)

I LOve Spencers voice its awesome, dont hate…. appreciate
