(THE REAL) NICK SIMMONS COMMENTS ON PLAGIARISM ACCUSATIONS

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 at 11:30am by

Last week the publication of Nick “Son of Gene” Simmons’ comic book, Incarnate, was halted after it became apparent to one of the millions of readers of a manga called Bleach that Simmons was blatantly stealing from that title. At the time we thought that Nicky had taken to Facebook to demand an apology, but it turned out it was just some dude who gets his ya-yas by pretending to be the douche bag kids of famous rock stars.

But now Topless Robot reports that the real Nick Simmons has released a statement, in which he attempts to simultaneously apologize for being a worthless piece of dung and not quite acknowledge that he’s a worthless piece of dung:

“Like most artists I am inspired by work I admire. There are certain similarities between some of my work and the work of others. This was simply meant as an homage to artists I respect, and I definitely want to apologize to any Manga fans or fellow Manga artists who feel I went too far. My inspirations reflect the fact that certain fundamental imagery is common to all Manga. This is the nature of the medium. I am a big fan of Bleach, as well as other Manga titles. And I am certainly sorry if anyone was offended or upset by what they perceive to be the similarity between my work and the work of artists that I admire and who inspire me.” — Nick Simmons

Hey, Nick, don’t sweat it. You were just paying homage to the artists’ whose work you admire! And it was clearly an homage, not plagiarism, right?

Dude, if ever an honest apology was warranted, this is the time. Don’t pretend you didn’t steal when the evidence is right there, schmucky.

He could have at least ripped off a decent manga. Bleach should have ended long ago.

And if you have the material to copy, sitting directly in front of your damn face, at least copy it correctly. Don’t make it look worse. Especially when Bleach isn’t exactly the most fantastically drawn manga ever created anyway.

But yea, this guy needs to shut the fuck up. He’s an insult to real artists and this thing wouldn’t have even made it past the idea stage if it weren’t for daddy.

As an artist and a comic book artist, I’m so happy to see this post. This silver spoon, little fucking rich kid, gets a major publishing deal because of who his father is. There are at least 10,000 comic book artists that are trying to get their creation published right now and this fortunate son can’t even create his own work!?!?

He didn’t just get inspiration from a popular manga series, he fucking copied it, line for line.

If there was ever an argument FOR copyright laws and intellectual property…this is it.

That whole “homage” excuse is such a crock. Quentin Tarantino uses that bullshit everytime someone points out that most of the stuff he puts out his copied.

I read an interview of Tarantino and although I can’t find it now, he pretty much said that he copies movies and that is his style. And then I remember him distinctly saying that, “If you don’t like this, don’t watch my movies.” I really like Tarantino. He’s a really good writer.

Kids today don’t understand plagiarism. I blame mash-ups.

Here’s what the publishing company said:

“We at Radical Publishing, Inc. and Radical Comics, Inc. are quite concerned to hear the news surrounding Nick Simmons’s Incarnate Comic Book. We are taking this matter seriously and making efforts now to contact the publishers of the works in question in an effort to resolve this matter. We have halted further production and distribution of the “Incarnate” comic book and trade paperback until the matter is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. Rest assured that Radical is taking swift action regarding this matter and will continue in its efforts to maintain the integrity and protect the intellectual property of artists throughout the world whose creative works are the bedrock of our Company and the comic book industry.”

See, I know how to cite my sources…This Sommons kid obviously has never written a high school essay… Or he has, and he took everything as his own, and then daddy paid off not only the teacher, but the whole school to keep their mouths shut..

This is just like the Vanilla Ice thing. you change one beat and you think you’re original. you change one crayon color and you think you’re an artist.

I am beginning to love Hip Hop. Artists at least will list all the songs they sampled. They take something that was once original and turn it into something else original.

This dude shoulda just went to the Xerox. So much easier. Fuck “celebrities.”
