Ex-Cerebral Bore Vocalist Covers Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”

Since splitting with Cerebral Bore in November, vocalist Simone “Som” Pluijmers has gotten back to her roots — namely, the wonderful world of YouTube vocal covers. But whereas Pluijmers made her name doing death metal covers of, y’know, death metal songs, her return to the scene is a death metal cover of… “Barbie Girl,” the endlessly irritating 90s ditty from one-hit-wonders, Aqua. And if you ever thought that all the song needed were some diarrhea vox to make it more tolerable, well… you thought wrong.

I kind of wonder if Pluijmers meant this as some sort of statement about sexism in metal — she was basically accused of walking out on Cerebral Bore like a diva, a claim she naturally denies, asserting instead that guitarist Paul McGuire is a prickish dictator. It’s not a stretch to hear lyrics like “I’m your doll” as a commentary on the situation. Am I reaching?

Whatever the case, I really, sincerely wish Pluijmers the best of luck in all her future musical endeavors, as long as those endeavors don’t include any more covers of awful pop songs. Okay maybe one Ace of Base tune but that it’s, seriously.
