The 25 Best Metal Bands of All Timedio 25 bands listMetalSucks recently polled over a hundred of metal’s most revered musicians, critics, journalists, artists, publicists, and industry insiders to find out which 25 bands represent the very BEST in the history of metal. Today we continue the countdown with the United States’ own…

Dio

It’s hard to know whether the voters for this list meant Dio the band or Dio the man when they cast his name in stone on their ballots. Dio the man was such an absolute metal God — and one who released so much good music with so many great bands — that it’s possible the man and the band are simply conflated in peoples’ minds… and who could blame ’em?

But in keeping with the convention already set forth in this countdown, let’s take the votes at face value and assume those who penned “Dio” into the annals of heavy metal history were talking solely about the band Ronnie James formed with fellow former Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice in 1982. Appropriately enough for his namesake — and in spite of the massive popularity of his former employers — Dio is the band for which the man is best known and most appreciated, and the band’s eleven (!) albums undoubtedly contain his strongest work.

Credit where it’s due as Appice and future Def Leppard axeman Vivian Campbell deserve plenty of it, having contributed a hefty amount of songwriting to Dio’s biggest jams. Sure, some of Dio’s largest smashes like “Holy Diver” and “We Rock” are conspicuously absent their names, but to assume Dio’s success was the sole driver of RJD’s vision would be to completely ignore the monstrous performances that Campbell, Appice and bassist Jimmy Bain laid down on those early albums. It was truly a collaborative effort even if RJD’s high-flying voice was the catalyst.

A rotating cast of guitarists, bassists and eventually drummers would never quite recapture the magic of Dio’s first four albums, but the legacy remains intact: those albums contain some of the finest metal tracks ever put to tape. True metal anthems as played by true metal legnds.
