Sigh - Graveward

Hi MetalSucks reader! Welcome to another very, very, very special Shit That Comes Out Today, your satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and now, we stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up!

Dendritic ArborDendritic Arbor
Romantic Love (Grimoire)
On a playlist with: Knelt Rote, Dead In The Manger, being stabbed
Listen Romantic Love full stream (here)

To be clever, the title Romantic Love would have had to mean that “romantic love” actually felt like falling down a staircase made of pickaxes.  That’s the complete and total cacophony of Dendritic Arbor’s (??) grind, black metal, and fuzz-blasting ambient drone/whatever-core! Big, big, booty but: DA takes ownership of this mess and the album comes together!

Sigh - GravewardSigh
Graveward (Candlelight)
On a playlist with: Enslaved, Emperor, Solefald
Listen Graveward full stream (here)
Read Graveward MetalSucks review (here)

In a music library arranged by subgenre, all Sigh albums get their own section. The “Sigh” section. Because no band sounds like Sigh. Well, not for long. And Graveward is all that you expect: nutty blackened avant post-NWOBHM. So many twists and turns, eg. a new bend on chorus vocals! Plenty to love, not least of all its bountiful silliness.

Arsis - We Are the NightmareArsis
We Are The Nightmare reissue (Metal Mind)
On a playlist with: Revocation, Soreption, Allegaeon
Listen “We Are The Nightmare” (here)

Arsis’ awesome 2013 album Unwelcome sounded like Revocation + Soreption + a pool-hall full of people moaning in orgasm. But before they came, this came first: 2008’s We Are The Nightmare, a well-rounded, gloriously imperfect tech-death album.

Crestfallen EP (eOne / Good Fight)
On a playlist with: Intervals, Monuments, djentnericore
Listen Crestfallen EP full stream (here)

What do you call generic djent core? Djentericore. (Add a “post” prefix to sound erudite or whatever.) So, even though it could’ve been written by any djentneric band, Auras’ Crestfallen EP is a nice listen. And there are a few fresh ideas (see “Terrene” on the fancy-pants Spotify playlist below).

Hogslayer defacerHogslayer
Defacer (Undergroove)
On a playlist with: Lord Dying, Red Fang, Torche
Listen “Despiser” (here)

Do you sometimes think that it’s nice to have a go-to, local-feel, doom-crunch band? Defacer feels like it’s behind the scenes, but it rocks right out front with all the big names! Expect crunchier, more ambient vibes compared to contemporaries. Old-school, fresh, and ballistic.

Blurring (Handshake Inc.)
On a playlist with: Lord Mantis, Coffinworm, Nuclear Assault
Listen Blurring full stream (here)

We need madness. We need intensity. We need pain! We’re exceptionally prone to hyperbole. So you’ll be like, “omg this Blurring album is the best album ever made and totally the sickest and most intense and most amazing thing ever.” You’ll be on the right track at least.
