The Atomic Bitchwax Gravitron

One of the founding members of The Atomic Bitchwax was guitarist Ed Mundell, a dude you may recognize as an 18-year member of the really special band Monster Magnet. In Magnet, Mundell was a revered sideman to Dave Wyndorf, like Jerry Harrison to David Byrne or, fine, Little Steven to Bruce Springsteen. But anyway Mundell departed TAB in 2005 and Magnet in 2010, yet by 2007, drummer Bob Pantella was in both bands so they were still getting mentioned in the same breath. Then in 2013, founding TAB member Chris Kosnik joined Monster Magnet, which means fireworks for the latter’s next album of new material (and the likelihood of permanent little-brother status for the former).

That’s a lot to keep straight, so no one could be blamed for disregarding the points of overlap between these two bands. Go ahead, disregard — there’s more important stuff to worry about: eg. Each band rips stoner metal a new one. Also, both are hornier and harder than most stoners (but not higher), and might’ve ruled US rock radio but ended up doing better in Europe. Of the two, TAB holds slightly tighter to FM’s pre-’80s wheelhouse in 2015 — a few riffs and a modest melody — and lets visuals and virtuosity add color. They begin a US tour Thursday, so let us introduce you to a new video from their April album Gravitron. Crank it up!

The Atomic Bitchwax’s Gravitron is out now via Tee Pee. Get it here and tourdates here.
