Anthrax have released the fifth episode of their Anthrax 40 for 40 video series, which celebrates the band’s 40th anniversary by taking a look at each individual ‘Thrax album over the course of the coming weeks. That will all lead up to a special career-spanning livestream performance on July 18 (the band’s actual 40th anniversary).

The latest installment focuses on the creation of the band’s sophomore album, Spreading the Disease (1985). In addition to just being a great fuckin’ thrash record, Disease is notable because it was Anthrax’s first full-length after cementing their line-up with singer Joey Belladonna and bassist Frank Bello. When people talk about “classic” Anthrax, they’re really taking about Disease and the following six or seven years of the band’s career.

Watch the video below. It includes interviews with Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, Bello, Belladonna, and Jon “Jonny Z” Zazula… but, somewhat weirdly, not with Dan Spitz. Spitz has been in prior episodes so I guess he just didn’t have anything interesting to say about Spreading the Disease.

You can catch up on prior episodes at these links:

The schedule for upcoming episodes is as follows:

  • May 17 – Among the Living
  • May 24 – State of Euphoria
  • May 31 – Persistence of Time
