Video: 7-Year-Old Drummer Nails Slipknot Cover on Ellen, Jay Weinberg Sings His Praises

0

Kids are the best fans. They don’t get too bogged down in metaphor and connotation and what this means for the world, they just like stuff that’s big and fun and connects with them. This is especially true of kids who love metal, because metal is exciting and loud and honest about what it feels. Now, a seven-year-old drummer has learned that metal looks after its own after he nails a cover of Slipknot‘s “Sulfur” on Ellen, earning himself a Jay Weinberg Signature Snare — and the approval of Jay himself.

Video of this incredibly adorable feat comes from Ellen, who hosted seven-year-old Caleb Hayes on her show (you might remember Caleb from back when he was five, and Slipknot hung out with him after one of his drumming videos went viral). Caleb, rocking a leather jacket and faux-hawk, then showed off his talents via a cover of “Sulfur” off of Slipknot’s 2008 album All Hope Is Gone. And look, we’re always going to be supportive of a kid getting into metal, but real talk, Caleb is talented. Watching his feet work the bass drum is actually pretty impressive.

Ellen, being a classy host, gifted Caleb his dream drum, the Jay Weinberg Signature Snare. However, perhaps even more awesome for Caleb is that Weinberg took to Instagram to sing his praises, writing:

Caleb!! Once again, you’ve made all your big brothers in @slipknot proud!????????❤️???????? What a way to own the moment, and deliver a fantastic performance. So stoked to see you rip it up on @TheEllenShow, and that you’re heading home with a new snare ???????????? Play it hard and often, my friend — I know you will!

Check out Caleb performing on Ellen and getting his free snare, followed by Jay’s post about him. Meanwhile, catch Slipknot at one of their upcoming tour dates:
